“Jacopo del Sellaio, Ahasuerus’s Banquet, 1490 circa, Tempera
on wood, cm 45 *63, Inv. 1890, n. 491.” Galleria degli Uffizi.
The painting probably decorated a wooden chest or a private furniture. The scene illustrates a biblical subject, the magnificent banquet offered by Ahusuerus, king of Persia. The painter really portrayed here a Renaissance feast, placed in the court of a Florentine patrician palace, where every detail is descripted: hostes sitting at the table, busy servants, the arrangement of the silver on the right and the splendid elegance of dresses and tapestries.” |
