Israel--Day Trip to Massada and the Dead Sea Resort of Ein Gedi

Massada was originally a summer palace of the Emporer Herod, builder of the Second Temple.  After the destruction of the Second Temple in 70 C.E. a band of religious zealots held out here against the Romans.  When defeat became likely,  they commited suicide on this mountain.

And now for a swim (or float?)  in the Dead Sea

No, its not snow!  These are salt crystals (probably potassium chloride)  that have crystalized from the heavily salty Dead Sea. 

Here, even the adults like to play in the mud!
