The 2008 HCST production of Guys and Dolls was a great production! After expenses, HCST proudly donated $2,500 to Prepare for Success and $6,300 to the Salvation Army.
2009 Show Beneficiaries: Prepare for Success and FIRN, a nonprofit organization in Howard County, Maryland that empowers immigrants, refugees, asylees and other foreign-born individuals by helping them to access community resources and opportunities.
Director’s Corner: The production team and I are thrilled to announce that Bye Bye Birdie will be our 2009 summer production. (We had originally selected Fiddler on the Roof but due to a national tour, we were unable to secure the rights.)
Bye Bye Birdie is a fun, upbeat show that will surely bring a smile to your face. It originally opened on Broadway in 1960 and received four Tony Awards, including Best Musical. The show offers parts for both teens and adults, as well as an older child. There are several choral numbers featuring both teens and adults. Well-known songs include “Kids,” “Put On A Happy Face,” and “We Got A Lot Of Living To Do.”
Auditions are set for April 22 from 7 to 9:30 P.M. and Saturday, April 25 from 10:00 A.M. to noon at Mt. Hebron High School. Please prepare a song to sing. Bring sheet music as an accompanist will be provided. A song from the show is encouraged. You may also bring an instrumental CD to sing along with. If you do, please have the CD /tape cued up and ready to go. Please limit the time of your song to 60 seconds.
Because of renovations to Mt Hebron, our show will be at Centennial High School this summer. We are so looking forward to seeing you and your friends at auditions.

Howard County Summer Theatre Junior Show 2009
Laura, Kassi and Marla are very excited to begin work on the 4th Junior show! Thoroughly Modern Millie ironically is set in the 1920s, a time when women were entering the work force and the rules of love and social behavior were changing forever. It is the classic story of a young girl, Millie Dillmount, who hopes to make a new life for herself in the Big Apple. However, there is a subplot filled with a mysterious Mrs. Meers and a crime ring. Only Millie and her new-found love Jimmy can save the day. The show includes large dance numbers and lots of crazy male and female characters. In 2002, it won the Tony Award for Best Musical. For more information on “Millie,” check out the Music Theatre International website at www.mtishows.com
Auditions are set for March 28 at 10 A.M. at Long Reach High School. Rehearsals will begin the end of April. The schedule will be two days per week and some weekends until school lets out; then, we will rehearse every day in the afternoon. We will also rehearse on the last three half-days of school (Howard County Public School’s calendar). Most of the rehearsals will be at Long Reach High School until we move a week before our performances at Centennial High School (on Centennial Lane in Ellicott City). Shows are Sunday, June 26 at 2:00 P.M. and Monday, June 27 at 7:30 P.M.
Auditions are open to anyone completing second grade through ninth grade. Please prepare a song to sing; a CD player for your karaoke tape will be provided. Also please bring a list of conflicts to the audition. (Note: Anyone who has camp or vacation scheduled during the month of June should NOT audition.)
We are currently looking for a musical director. For more information on this position or about auditions please email Marla Blasko at mjblasko@verizon.net.
