For many years, signs of wealth were everywhere and in some circles Manchester was referred to as " a playground for millionaires." Chauffeur-dirven Cadillacs, Packards and LaSalles moved swiftly about the streets. Manchester was always a favorite of the diplomatic community. In 1904 alone, 11 ambassadors summered in town. President William Howard Taft frequently played golf at the Essex Country Club. |

At the turn of the century it was expanded, covered in clapboard, shuttered and painted a soft yellow in the Colonial Revival fashion. |
When the club burned in 1913, it was replaced by the existing clubhouse, a masonary structure, which combines Tudor and Georgian forms, making it appear to have evolved over a period of time. Such was the pinnacle of architectural development in Manchester during the late Victorian period as it approached the 20th century. |
