Magpie

(Magazine Programme)

This magazine programme was presented live from Studio 3 at Teddington (with filmed inserts). It began on 30 July 1968 (Thames' first day on ITV), and was initially broadcast on Tuesdays as a weekly 40 minute programme. The format was then changed in February 1969 to a twice weekly 25 minute programme which aired on Tuesdays and Thursdays. A further change came in August 1972 when the broadcast days were altered to Tuesdays and Fridays.
The 'Magpie Appeal' was an annual charity fund raising excercise which asked viewers for donations. During the weeks of the 'Appeal' the running total was shown each programme - indicated by the length of a red line running first around Studio 3, then out into the corridor and, potentially, around the entire Teddington Studio complex.
In 1972 Magpie won the 'Prix Jeunesse', an international prize for children's TV programmes, for "My Brother David" - about life with a brother who is handicapped.
In 1980 John Hambley, the Controller of Children's Programmes at Thames, took the decision to end the programme because he believed it was trying to be 'all things to everyone'. The final programme, broadcast on 6 June 1980, invited the original three presenters back to compete in a 'Table Cloth Removing' contest!?!
