Sept. 21, 1995, "Pilot"

Jonathan Silverman stars as a lone bachelor among a group of couples. In the opener, his best friends Sam and Janeane arrange a dinner date for him with Delilah, a TIME editor who is an outrageous name-dropper with a glass-shattering laugh.

NOTE: Olivia D'Abo became a regular cast member of "The Single Guy" in the second season (playing a different character).

Babysitting becomes a hard habit for Jonathan to break after he discovers that Matt and Janeane's eight-month-old baby, Sebastian, attracts women like a magnet. Meanwhile, Trudy and Sam experience misadventures in apartment sitting when her fastidious boss leaves her in charge while he's away in Europe.

Jonathan decides to become a Big Brother after being inspired by Matt's volunteer work.

Julia Louis-Dreyfus pulls out all the stops as Tina, one of Jonathan's girlfriends. Their relationship, which started off as very sexy, is beginning to wane until they are mugged and Tina turns into a sexual predator. However, she has to put them in danger each and every time they contemplate having sex.

Nov. 16, 1995, "Sister"

Jonathan's mutual repulsion for Janeane's abrasive sister Martha doesn't get in the way of a mutual attraction when the two reluctantly become romantically linked during Martha's New York visit for Thanksgiving. Jonathan settles into a long distance relationship with Janeane's sister Martha. Janeane and Sam are convinced there is potential for a real romance and decide to help move things along. The two matchmakers tell the pair that the other is looking for a serious relationship causing confusion and this makes Martha accept a lucrative job offer in New York.

Feb. 8, 1996, "Affair"

Jonathan gets the wrong idea when Paula Abdul and Sam spend alot of time together producing her new album. Meanwhile, when Trudy goes to Budapest to pick up a piece of art, cops detain her when she doesn't have her visa thanks to Sam's careless packing.

Jonathan tries to win over a woman named Charlie McCarthy, an arrogant and alluring reviewer who was not won over by his novel. Meanwhile, Sam and Trudy conspire to outhustle a card shark. Matt struggles to write an anniversary ode to Janeane.

NOTE: This episode was Jensen Daggett's first appearance as Charlie McCarthy.


Mar. 14, 1996, "Lovenest"

Jonathan attends a book fair in Chicago where Charlie McCarthy is attending. Matt and Janeane plus Sam and Trudy discover that Jonathan's apartment makes a great place to go for romantic trysts. Charlie McCarthy and Jonathan go out on their first date.


May 2, 1996, "Kids"

Sam and Trudy -- hoping to learn if they're ready to be parents -- encourage Janeane and Matt to spend a romantic evening at a hotel so they can baby-sit Sebastian. Their plan takes a turn for the worse after Jonathan coaxes them into bringing the baby to a boxing match and they hit a snag on the subway, leaving the unknowing parents panic-stricken when they return home to check on the baby-sitters.


May 9, 1996, "Pop"

The phrase "like father, like son" takes on new meaning for Jonathan when his dad, Walter, brings home Erika, the woman he intends to marry. Erika turns out to be the professor with whom Jonathan had a brief but close encounter during college. Elsewhere, when Matt finds a demo tape hidden in a flea market purchase, Sam gathers music industry heavyweights to bid on what he suspects is a lost recording from one of the world's best-known bands.

NOTE: This is the first appearance of Walter, Jonathan Eliot's father.


May 16, 1996, "Moving"

Jonathan considers abandoning single life for his new girlfriend, Charlie, after he moves in with her for a month while his apartment is being fixed. Meanwhile, an overworked Sam regrets making a career move based on Matt's advice.

NOTE: This was the season finale for the first season of "The Single Guy." This episode was supposed to be part one of a two part cliffhanger, but the conclusion was unaired (see the "Unaired Episodes" section at the end of this guide).

NOTE: This was not the episode intended to air as the second season opener. "Pilot Redux," the episode that was originally supposed to air included information about why the characters Janeane and Matt disappeared and was the conclusion to the first season episode "Moving." The Sept. 12, 1996 issue of "TV Guide," reported that the characters Matt and Janeane left because Matt gets a job with the Dole campaign. Jonathan learns what a pain it is to be nice when he agrees to watch Marie's cat, despite his allergies. He also agrees to be the best man at the wedding for Tony, an aquaintance he barely knows. Trudy gives away Sam's lucky shoes right when he wants to ask for a raise, so he borrows Russell's good luck charm. Tony's fiancee wants Jonathan's help in getting her out of marrying Tony, but then changes her mind.

NOTE: In real life Jonathan Silverman is allergic to cats.


Oct. 3, 1996, "Good God"

When Jonathan rewrites sermons for Reverend Fuller, an inept preacher, heavenly things begin to happen. Sam's ailing back is mysteriously healed and Jonathan meets Sara, the woman of his dreams. But when Reverend Fuller talks to Jonathan about his wife, also named Sarah, Jonathan believes that he's slept with the Reverend's wife.


Oct. 10, 1996, "Kept Man"

Oct. 17, 1996, "Strip Club"

As their money runs out, Jonathan and Marie compete for the same low-paying job. When Sam admits to Russell that he visited a strip club named "The Booty Barn," Russell seizes the opportunity to blackmail Sam into working at The Bagel.


Oct. 31, 1996, "Love Train"

Nov. 7, 1996, "The Virgin"

Manny gets kicked out of the house by his wife, so Jonathan lets him stay at his place until Manny can patch things up. Trudy asks Jonathan and Manny to go to Chicago to pick up a piece of performance art entitled "The Virgin." Much to their surprise, the subject turns out to be a gorgeous 30-year-old woman named Kari who only has eyes for Jonathan. Meanwhile, Sam and Marie supply the sound effects for an action movie. Russell can't find a place to be alone with his girlfriend, Tina.


Nov. 14, 1996, "Double Date"

Marie is missing her ex-husband on what would have been their wedding anniversary. In an attempt to cheer her up, Jonathan takes her out on a date, which lands Marie in the hospital with a case of food poisoning. Dinner plans go awry when Trudy agrees to dine with Eric, an old beau who's in town, and Sam misinterprets Eric's intentions. Meanwhile, Trudy's parents---who disapprove of Sam---are visiting; and Manny tells Russell about his foolproof system for predicting the outcome of football games.

NOTE: Eric is played by Ming-Na Wen's real life husband, Eric Michael Zee. This episode puts an emphasis on the sexual tension between Marie and Jonathan.


Nov. 21, 1996, "Davy Jones"

Jonathan invites Davy Jones to be his Thanksgiving-dinner guest of honor hoping that Davy will choose him to ghostwrite his upcoming autobiography. Marie's ex-husband Ricky shows up at the Thanksgiving dinner only to discover Marie is finally over him. Sam and Trudy, meanwhile, try to escape the festivities, only to run afoul of a turkey and some Pilgrims.

NOTE: This is the first appearance of Marie's ex-husband, Ricky.


Dec. 12, 1996, "Deepest Cut"

Jonathan becomes an unlikely suspect when a holiday dinner with his meddling mom, Sarah, leads to a kitchen mishap and a trip to the emergency room. Unfazed, Sarah goes into matchmaking mode for Jonathan and attempts to set him up with a lovely young doctor named Sandy. Meanwhile, Sarah sends Sam and Trudy out into the snow for a sandwich. A male nurse becomes suspicious of Jonathan's role in his mother's injury, Sam becomes suspicious of Canadians, and Russell becomes suspicious of a customer at The Bagel who keeps giving him very big tips.

NOTE: This is the first appearance of Jonathan Eliot's mother, Sarah.

Jan. 9, 1997, "New Year"

Jonathan and his friends plan major life changes for the new year. Sam and Trudy decide to have a baby, Marie wants to pursue a Broadway career, and a therapist tells Jonathan to stop dating. Jonathan has trouble following her advice, especially when his ex-girlfriend Charlie resurfaces.

NOTE: Sam reveals his father is a psychiatrist in this episode. Also, Jonathan states that his relationship with Charile McCarthy only lasted six weeks.


Jan. 16, 1997, "Like Father..."

Jonathan's father, Walter, is about to marry Erika, the woman Jonathan once had "a very brief fling" with in college. Jonathan is surprised by how Walter's attitude has changed, but then causes his father to reconsider his new attitude when he makes an alcohol-induced toast to his father and Erika at the pre-wedding party. Unfortunately, Jonathan's toast threatens to put a halt to the upcoming event. Meanwhile, Jonathan's mother Sarah agrees to attend the wedding, Sam and Trudy try to adopt a child, and Marie hopes that a cold sore won't interefere with an audition.


Jan. 23, 1997, "Starting Over"

The life of a freelance writer has taken its toll on Jonathan, so he finally gets a full-time job at an ad agency. Along with his new job, Jonathan gets a new neighbor named Dan Montgomery, an investment banker. Jonathan and Dan's instantaneous friendship causes Sam some concern because he feels second best. Meanwhile, Jonathan and Dan go on a wild night of partying which takes them to Philadelphia, just hours before Jonathan's first day on the job. Marie doesn't think that Dan is as charming as he himself does.

NOTE: Dan Cortese starred with Jonathan Silverman in the 1996 film "...At First Sight." This episode establishes Jonathan Eliot's first steady job.


Jan. 30, 1997, "Just Friends?"

Jonathan finds himself in a sticky situation when he has second thoughts about dating an eccentric co-worker named Jordan and is then partnered with her on an ad campaign; Trudy and Sam take a shot at parenting when they "adopt" an injured Manny; Dan and Marie try to become friends.


Feb. 6, 1997, "Macho Men"

Boys will be boys as Jonathan, Sam and Dan set out to prove which one is the most macho. As part of their competition, Dan challenges Jonathan to a game of "extreme hoops," a combination of bungee jumping and basketball. Meanwhile, Trudy asks Sam to get rid of all his junk in order to make room for the baby they hope to adopt. Melody Pugh, a caring and eccentric social worker, tries to help Sam and Trudy adopt a baby.


Feb. 13, 1997, "Mother Love"

Jonathan's mother dates his new boss, Mr. Klug, who becomes so infatuated with her that he neglects his work. Meanwhile, Marie develops an attraction to Russell when they rehearse a scene from "Romeo and Juliet," and Sam and Trudy move closer to adoption.


Feb. 20, 1997, "Big Baby"

Sam and Trudy finally adopt a child, but everyone's surprised that it's a 7-year-old named Teddy. And Jonathan wonders if the new addition will alter his close friendship with Sam. Sam's father, Dr. Dick Sloane, who is an outspoken psychiatrist, shows up. Rudy, the grandson of the Sloanes' adoption counselor and Dr. Sloane both play a pivotal role in the adoption plans of Sam and Trudy.

NOTE: This is the first appearance of Sam's father, Dr. Dick Sloane. This is also the first appearance of the child Trudy and Sam adopt.


March 26, 1997, "Grandfather Clause"

An instantaneous mutual attraction develops between Jonathan and Manny's granddaughter Isabela, who's engaged to be married. When Isabela calls off her wedding, Manny finds out about Isabela's attraction to Jonathan and expects Jonathan to become the new groom. Meanwhile, Marie and Dan bet neither of them can last a day as a member of the opposite sex.

NOTE: This episode includes the first appearance of Manny's wife, Mrs. Cordova.


April 2, 1997, "Johnny Hollywood"

Meanwhile, Trudy interferes with Sam's new rock band; and Dan interests Manny, Marie and Russell in a stock deal.


April 9, 1997, "Au Pair"

In order to spend more time together, Sam and Trudy hire an au pair to babysit for Teddy. Meanwhile, Jonathan falls head over heels for the attractive au pair. Manny and Dan go head to head to settle a dispute in a mock trial headed by Russell.


April 16, 1997, "Vegas Finale"

Everyone vacations in Las Vegas, where Marie has a gig portraying Cher; Trudy gets gambling fever; and Jonathan wakes up married. Meanwhile, Sam tries to live on $5 a day; Manny encounters an aggressive woman; Dan has nothing but good luck; and Russell is asked to impersonate Sonny Bono.


UNAIRED EPISODES

"Pilot Redux"

Supporting cast - Charlie McCarthy: Jensen Daggett, Studio Consultant: Dan Butler

After his romance with Charlie sours, Jonathan tries to stay optimistic despite a sudden string of bad luck. And Trudy goes toe-to-toe with an obnoxious studio consultant, to save Sam's honor when the three compete in a charity run. Shawn Michael Howard joins the cast as a law student working his way through school at a bagel restaurant.

NOTE: This episode was originally supposed to air Sept. 19, 1996 as the second season opener of "The Single Guy," but was pulled at the last minute for unknown reasons. This episode would have been the conclusion to the season one episode "Moving." Beginning with this episode, the characters Matt and Janeane were no longer part of the series, and their disappearance was supposed to have been explained.
