Why Dean Martin? | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
Why indeed. If ya gotta ask, you're never gonna know. But I'm feeling generous today, so I'll give ya some background to help ya understand.
He was the personification of all that was cool and swingin'.
He was the kinda guy all other guys want to be and all chicks want to be with. He made everything he did look so easy, whether it was singing, dancing, acting, playing cards or golfing...
For an ordinary working-class guy from a nowhere town like Steubenville to make it big, and so big that he became a household name, one of the highest paid entertainers of his time, an American legend--it took class and style. And lots of talent. Dino had all of these.
A little bit of personal info from Kitty here--it wasn't until sometime last summer I'd ever really known what it was that he did. I'd heard the name before, usually in conjunction with Jerry Lewis, but if you'd asked me to name anything he'd sung or been in, I woulda drawn a blank. The first song I'd heard of his was, naturally, "That's Amore," and the first movie of his that I saw was "The Stooge," at around 3 AM on AMC. And I was hooked.
Maybe I'm just a generation or two too late. But that ain't the point. Sure, ya can argue that the Martin & Lewis movies are pretty predictable, but most movies are, and these were at least entertaining. The movies he made after their breakup were not as predictable... I like "Some Came Running" and "Robin and the 7 Hoods," personally, but I could watch any of them. Repeatedly.
I'll be hanging up some more pictures here in this corner when I get a chance, as well as putting up my reviews and opinions of various movies, but it's a busy time of year and other matters await. Until then...
Ya can keep busy while ya wait, learning to shoot craps like Steve Wiley in Hollywood or Bust! Or play cards, like Bama Dillert in Some Came Running! |

Or go case the Martin & Lewis corner!
Visit La Maison Rouge! | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
Or just sit back, relax, and wait for the party to begin...
Here's a list (chronologically) of all Dino's movies I have and'll get around to reviewing and sharing my lil ol' opinions about, one of these days: At War With the Army--1951 Sailor Beware-- 1951 Jumping Jacks-- 1952 The Stooge-- 1953 Scared Stiff-- 1953 Money From Home-- 1954 Living It Up-- 1954 Artists and Models-- 1955 Hollywood or Bust-- 1956 Ten Thousand Bedrooms-- 1957 The Young Lions-- 1958 Some Came Running-- 1959 Rio Bravo-- 1959 Who Was That Lady?-- 1960 Bells Are Ringing-- 1960 Ocean's Eleven-- 1960 Come Blow Your Horn-- 1963 4 for Texas-- 1963 Robin and the 7 Hoods-- 1964 The Sons of Katie Elder-- 1965 Airport-- 1970 |

A little patience, pally. . . I've got a dozen or so reviews written up, just haven't typed them in yet, what with it taking an hour or so per review, even at 80 WPM (slow connection). In the meantime, watch some Dino on your own. . .
