Disclaimers:
Sailor Moon and co.
do not belong to me, and I'm not making any money off of this story.
Oh well. Dair Allan, David Allan, their counter-parts and their story,
however, are mine.
I've taken the whole Sailor Moon mythology and kinda twisted and turned it... this is completely my own version of what "could be." It takes place after Sailor Stars. I've never seen the anime that far (yes, DiC is my only source for Sailor Moon anime), but I have read the translated manga all the way through. Point being: if some details about the attacks/transformations, etc., are a little off, please don't shoot me. Thanks. :)
Comments! Woohoo!
"Welcome me to a haven
given,
It's well received
into my open arms.
I ran in my sleep
through shaking tremors,
I had the splitting
Earth echoing in my ears."
-from "Welcome Me" by Amy Ray
"Raye?" Dair called
as she walked up the temple's front steps. "Raye, it's Dair and Mal.
Are you--" She stopped suddenly as a figure stepped from the shadows,
startling her. She relaxed as she realized it was only Darien.
"You scared me! Announce yourself next time, ne?"
He smiled, but couldn't
help notice that same strange sadness in her dark blue eyes. What
was it about this girl that seemed so familiar to him? "Gomen.
I didn't mean to frighten you. Everyone else is inside." He
gestured for the two to follow, and they made their way into the main part
of the lovely little temple.
"Kon'nichi wa, minna,"
Dair said to her new friends with a smile.
"Kon'nichi wa, Dair,
Benton," Serena replied, motioning for them to come sit next to her on
the floor. "I was a little bit surprised when you called me this
morning. Is something wrong?"
Dair hesitated, glancing
over at Mal. At the sight of his reassuring smile, she turned back
to the group and said, "It's about Mal, actually... but maybe I should
let him tell it." She absently stroked Serena's cat, Luna, and smiled
at the sound of her purring.
"It's my memory,"
he said after a moment. "I can't remember my childhood, my real name,
my parents... anything that happened more than... well, three years ago.
I have vague flashes of memory occasionally... memories of all of you,
memories of strange, dark places..." he trailed off, unable to meet their
eyes. "I remember someone named Zoisite--" this drew such a startled
gasp from the group that he looked up sharply, wondering what they knew.
"I knew he looked
familiar!" Serena declared, jumping to her feet. "He's Malachite!
Raye, didn't you sense his evil?"
Dair stood up, facing
her friend with narrow eyes. "Evil? Mal is not evil!
What are you talking about, Serena?!"
Serena's only reply
was to throw her hand up in the air and cry, "Moon Eternal, Make up!"
The other girls jumped up from their positions on the floor, and each, in turn, cried, "Mars Crystal Power!"
"Jupiter Crystal Power!"
"Venus Crystal Power!"
"Mercury Crystal Power!"
"Make up!" they all cried together. There were flashes of light so bright Dair was forced to cover her eyes, and when she lowered her arms, she found herself facing Eternal Sailor Moon, Super Sailor Mars, Sailor Jupiter, Sailor Venus and Sailor Mercury. She thought she was going to faint.
"What is going on here!?" she cried, turning back to face Mal and Darien -- but Darien was gone, and when she turned around again, Tuxedo Mask stood with the senshi.
"I don't know how you managed to hide from us, Malachite, but we know your true identity now! In the name of the moon, we will punish you!" Sailor Moon cried.
"Serena, what are you talking about? This is Benton Mallory, my best friend. He isn't evil!"
"Dair, please move aside. I don't want this to end up like Nephrite and Molly."
"Nephrite..." she vaguely heard Mal whisper. "Sailor Moon, no! Don't hurt her... she doesn't know who I was."
"Mal, you don't know who you are!"
"Yes, I do, Dair... now I do. I am Malachite... but I'm not who you think I am, Sailor Moon! The man who tried to kill you, the man who worked for Queen Beryl, he is dead! I'm like I was... before... in the Silver Millennium." He knelt before Tuxedo Mask. "My Prince, please forgive me. I betrayed you... I was tempted by promises of power and glory, and I turned my back on you, my sovereign and my best friend. I would understand if you wish to punish me."
Super Sailor Mars frowned. "I would've been able to sense his evil... but perhaps he just has it so well hidden..." she trailed off, unsure.
"Eternal Sailor Moon," Tuxedo Mask said slowly, never raising his eyes from the kneeling man, "perhaps you could help him?"
"Help him?" Dair demanded. "If that's an euphemism for 'destroy him,' then you better the hell not!"
"Nai, Dair... I will not destroy him. Watch. Silver Moon Crystal Power Kiss!" she cried. She was lifted up and surrounded in a golden light that extended to encompass the kneeling Malachite. It washed over him, and he cried out in pain.
"Nai! You're hurting him! Please, Sailor Moon!" Dair cried, helpless as she watched the strange events unfolding before her.
The light vanished, and Malachite lay on the ground, unconscious. Dair rushed to his side and Sailor Moon said, "He'll be all right, Dair. I healed him of the evil that Beryl infected him with." There was another flash as the entire group destransformed. Darien knelt beside Malachite, watching the pretty American as she wept over her beloved.
"I remember now," he whispered to her. "I remember who you are."
She glanced up at him, her face streaked with tears. "Don't talk to me about who people are, Darien. All of you are... are the Sailor Senshi? I thought... I thought it was just a story... how is this possible?"
Serena knelt next to
her, placing a quiet hand on the girl's shoulder. "There's a lot
for us to explain, ne? We usually don't let so-called 'outsiders'
into our group for this very reason, but..." she shared a glance
with her friends,
and they all nodded, "but we felt a connection to you. And now I
guess we all see why."
"A connection?" Dair whispered bitterly, brushing a lock of silvery-mint hair off Mal's forehead. "What kind of connection could all of you feel to me?"
"Have you ever had... dreams of a place you've never been before? I don't mean dreams of Rome or Paris, but dreams of a place unlike any you've ever even imagined?" Darien began.
"Hasn't everyone?" she asked, unsure where he was going with this.
"But these dreams would feel real... as though they weren't dreams at all, but memories."
She looked away, angry. "Hai, I've had dreams like that. What the hell does that have to do with anything?"
"Have you ever heard of the Silver Millennium?" Raye asked gently.
Dair stood up as if something had bitten her. "Nai!" she cried. "What are you talking about? There's no such thing!" She turned to run from the temple, but Darien caught up with her, grabbing her arm.
"Listen to me! The Silver Millennium was real, and you lived there... we all did! You... you're my sister, Dair."
"No I'm not! My brother is dead, Darien! Now let me go!" As she struggled with him, a strange symbol -- that of a cross inscribed within a circle -- appeared on her forehead. It was the symbol for Earth.
"Earth!" Luna cried, jumping onto Darien's shoulder. "She is Sailor Earth!"
"What?!" Serena cried.
"But I thought Darien was the equivalent of Sailor Earth," Amy said, typing furiously on a small, hand-held computer.
"You're all crazy!" Dair cried, finally breaking free of Darien's grip. "I'm not your sister, Darien, none of you are the Sailor Senshi, I didn't just hear Luna speak, and Mal isn't some denizen of evil!" She turned and ran away from the temple as fast as she could, ran away from the memories that haunted her, memories of a time Darien had called the Silver Millennium.
"They're beautiful,
Your Majesty," a servant said to the beaming queen as she tucked the newborn
twins into their cradles.
"I don't wanna
sister!" the young prince cried, stomping his foot to reinforce the point.
"Now, Endymion,
don't be silly. Look at her... look at how beautiful she is," the
queen told her son with a kind smile, rocking the tiny girl's cradle gently.
"No! She's
an icky girl.
I didn't ask for a sister too! I wanted a brother, a little brother!
Why could you have got me just the brother like I asked!?"
With this petulant outburst, the little boy ran from the room, and his
mother sighed, glancing at her husband warily.
"He'll get used
to it, Ceres," the man said softly.
"I hope so," she
whispered. "I do hope so."
"No!" Dair whimpered
in her sleep, rebelling against the images flashing through her mind.
The dream changed, and she was older... the boy named Endymion was older...
"Endy, are you
every gonna teach me to use a sword? Come on, come on, you promised!"
the ten-year-old, black-haired princess begged of her brother.
"Persephone, please!
I'm very busy these days and I haven't time to deal with you following
me around every which way!" he cried, shaking off the grip of his little
sister and hurrying through the palace halls.
"You're gonna be
sorry when I go away to the Moon, Endy! When I become one of Princess
Serenity's guardians you'll wish you had
taught me, because you'll miss me! You just wait, Endymion!
Hmmmmph," she muttered, "I'll just get Phoebus to teach me. You hear
that, Endy!?" she cried. "I'm gonna get my other brother to
teach me, because he's better with a sword than you anyway!"
The scene changed
again.
The same girl, older
now, stood with four other girls, girls Dair knew. There was tall
Lita, her chestnut hair tied up in its ponytail; then sweet Mina, with
her cheerful red bow; soulful Raye with her dark hair so like Dair's own;
and last was quiet, intelligent Amy, her short hair seeming a paler shade
of blue in the silver light.
"You have come
to the Moon to begin your training as guardians of the Silver Millennium.
Do you accept this position as it has been presented to you?" a beautiful
woman with silver hair done in a style like Serena's asked.
"Yes, Your Majesty,"
all five girls said in unison.
The solemnity of
the meeting was broken when Serena herself began jumping up and down happily.
"I'm so glad you're all here!" she cried, trying to embrace all the girls
at once. "And Sephie, I just can't wait until your brother and his
guardians get here!"
The Princess of
Earth snorted rather indelicately. "If you mean Endymion, then my
brother is a... is a..." she frowned, at a loss for the proper adjective.
"You don't want to meet him, Serena, trust me. Now Phoebus, my twin--"
"Oh, come on, you
can't fool us! We all know how much you love Endymion," Serena interrupted
with a soft smile.
"Love that brat?
Not hardly. Just wait till you meet him, Princess: Endymion is a
spoiled, self-centered jerk, and I don't care if he is my brother!"
"He's not my brother!"
Dair whispered, trying to shake herself out of the dream. As soon
as her eyes opened, they closed again and she found herself in a grand
hall done in shades of green and blue. A woman with long, black hair
and indigo eyes -- she bore a startling resemblance to Dair herself --
sat
on a beautiful throne
carved from white marble, pale green and blue veins running through it.
"My dearest!" the
woman exclaimed, rising in one graceful movement to embrace a very confused
Dair Allan.
"Who are you?" she
asked, pushing the lovely woman away from her. "Where am I?"
The woman's face creased
in sadness, but she smiled a sweet, understanding little smile. "You've
forgotten, haven't you, my dearest Persephone?" she asked gently.
"I am your mother, Queen Ceres of Earth."
"You're not my mother!
Her name is Elizabeth, and she lives in America... she certainly isn't
a queen! And my name is Dair Allan! I'm... I'm dreaming...
this can't be real... this entire day has been one long, terrible dream!"
Suddenly Darien, dressed in black plate-mail armor, appeared behind the
woman calling herself Ceres. Beside him, dressed in golden armor,
another young man appeared, and Dair gasped, throwing herself into his
arms. "David!" she cried. "Oh, David, how I've missed you!"
Scalding hot tears streamed down her face, and she held onto him for dear
life.
He held her for a
long moment before grabbing hold of her elbows and gently pushing her away.
"No, sister, I am no longer David. Here I am Phoebus, the shining
one, and you are Persephone. Our mother has brought us all here so
that you may remember your past."
"Persephone, my name
is Endymion, but you know me as Darien Chiba. Remember the
past, sister... remember
the Silver Millennium, when you were a guardian of Princess Serenity of
the Moon."
"You were chosen,
my little one, to be a representative of Earth," Queen Ceres said softly.
"I don't understand,"
she whispered. "Are you saying I'm a Sailor Scout like Serena and
the others?"
"'Serena,' as you
call her, is known to me as Princess Serenity. She is the one you
have been chosen to protect. The other senshi are princesses of their
own planets, and they will guide you in the weeks ahead. Rei of Mars,
Ami of Mercury, Minako of Venus, Makoto of Jupiter, and Serenity of the
Moon, come forth!" There was a brilliant flash of light, and each
of the girls Dair had come to know in the past month appeared in long,
flowing gowns: silver and white for Serenity, red and purple for Rei, shades
of pale blue for Ami, orange and blue for Minako and green and pink for
Makoto.
"Persephone, my fifth
Inner Soldier, you must let go of your fear and remember your destiny.
Why do you fight it so?" Princess Serenity asked gently.
"It was a shock for
all of us," Rei said softly, "but once we accepted it, we realized that
being a Sailor Soldier filled a hole in our lives. Please try!"
"But..." Dair frowned,
glancing up at David-who-was-not-David, "but what about you? If you
lived back in this... this Silver Millennium... what is your destiny?
Was it your destiny to die!?" she demanded.
"We are just as frail
as mortals, Sephie," he said softly. "The brother you remember was
not whole, was not complete. When he died, his soul joined its other
half and soon, soon, my dear sister, we will see each other again... and
Earth will have three soldiers fighting for Her."
"That seems almost
unfair, doesn't it?" Minako asked with a frown. "The rest of us only
have one!"
"Nai, Minako," Ceres
told the senshi of love, "each planet has two soldiers, including Earth.
You will understand with time. Now all of you must wake. Tomorrow,
when the sun lightens the sky once again, this will seem to have been all
a dream... but remember, my dearest daughter, remember what you have
learned here."
The phone rang, startling
Dair from the strange, vivid dream she'd been having. "Moshi moshi,"
she said into the mouthpiece with a ragged sigh.
"Dair?" It was
Darien. "Did I wake you? Gomen. I know it's early, but
I was hoping we could get together and talk about what happened yesterday."
There was a silence so long and so complete that he began to wonder if
she'd hung up and he had just missed the click. "Dair?" he asked
hesitantly.
"Hai, I'm still here.
Look, Darien..." she trailed off, knowing what she wanted to say, but not
knowing if she should. Finally she sighed and was surprised to hear
herself tell him, "All right, fine, I'll meet you for
breakfast."
"Really?" he said,
just as surprised as she was. "Arigato, Dair... you won't regret
this! How about the coffee shop where we met in an hour?"
"This will be just
you and I, ne? I don't think I'm up to facing everyone else..."
"Just you and I.
I promise," he assured her.
"Well then... one
hour it is. Ja ne." She hung up quickly, before she could change
her mind, and jumped up from the bed. What kind of stupid idea was
this, anyway? A meeting with Darien... she must be an idiot!
I should keep as far away from them as I can, she thought.
And that includes Mal.
Her brow creased in
a frown. She had promised Malachite that no matter what they found
out, she wouldn't abandon him. "He warned you, didn't he?" she muttered
aloud. "He said he thought he might've been evil..." She shook
her head, knowing that this meeting was a bad idea, but also knowing that
she had no choice.
"I was worried you'd
change your mind," Darien admitted after they'd given the waitress their
order.
"I told you I'd be
here," Dair said, trying to keep her voice as cold as possible.
"I know this isn't
easy for you to accept, Dair... but what I told you yesterday, about you
being my sister, it was the truth."
"I know," she said
softly, not meeting his eyes.
Needless to say, this
threw him for a loop, but before he could reply, the waitress arrived with
his coffee and her tea. "What changed your mind?" he asked once she
was gone.
"You know very well,
Darien. I'm sure you remember that dream as well as I do."
She stirred a packet of sugar into the steaming brew and took a sip.
"If it hadn't been for David, I wouldn't have been convinced... but I miss
him. He said... he said we would meet again, and soon, and so that's
something I really, really need to believe. And if I'm going to believe
part of it, I might as well go for the whole damn thing."
"Luna has your transformation
pen," he told her after a moment.
She looked up, surprised.
"So I'll be able to do that whole... lights and ribbons and really short
skirt thing?" she asked with a smile.
He grinned.
"Yeah, I guess so."
There was a long,
comfortable silence before she said, "Are we... I mean, are we biological
siblings in this lifetime? David is dead, but the David in my dream
said his soul was incomplete, and that he would join with his other half.
So that means there's someone out there identical to David? But is
he related to me? Are you, Darien Chiba, related to me?"
"I... I don't know,"
he finally admitted. "My parents died when I was a little boy, and
I don't remember them at all. I guess that would mean we're not,
because you have parents, ne?"
"David and I were
adopted, actually, when we were babies. I don't know what happened
to our birth parents." She chewed her lower lip, thinking.
"I suppose it doesn't matter, really... but I would just like to know.
Would you be willing to give a blood sample?" she asked hesitantly.
"This is really important
to you, isn't it?" he said, leaning across the table toward her.
Dair nodded slowly,
not looking up from her tea. "I miss my family. I miss David.
I suppose it shouldn't make any difference to me if we're actually related,
but... this whole thing is so strange, Darien. I'm... I'm wondering
if I'm insane, or if I should stop seeing you and Serena and everyone...
and what was that whole thing yesterday with Mal? Who is Queen Beryl?
How is Mal connected to this Silver Millennium stuff?"
He put a hand over
hers and squeezed gently. "Malachite's history is a sad one, Dair,
but you must know that he really does love you... he always has."
She looked up sharply, her sapphire eyes meeting his identical ones. "Always? Did we... you mean we knew each other back then?"
"Malachite was the
head of my four guardians, and your..." he smiled slightly before saying,
"lover. It was quite a scandal, actually... but I think the match
pleased mother and father immensely. They liked Malachite."
"So what happened?"
Darien's face darkened
and he looked away. "They betrayed us. Queen Beryl, our enemy,
seduced the four of them to her side, promising power and glory and wealth...
I don't know quite how it happened, actually. Regardless, it was
the key to the downfall of the Silver Millennium.
"They all reappeared:
Jadeite, Nephrite, Zoisite and Malachite; just after Serena found out it
was her destiny to be Sailor Moon. Beryl was hell-bent on awaking
Queen Metallia, the power behind the Negaverse, and so the four of them
collected human energy and searched for the Silver Imperium
Crystal. It
was quite a mess..."
Dair sat back against
the booth in horror. "So he was right when he told me he was Serena's
enemy... but... the Malachite I know didn't seem evil."
"He wasn't. Apparently
his soul was reborn after Sailor Moon destroyed him, only without memories
of the past. He's naturally a good person, Dair. I hope you'll
remember that."
"I don't know what
I remember anymore, Darien. It's so strange thinking that I'm Dair
Allan and some princess from the past. I don't know how to get it
all straight in my mind."
He smiled gently.
"It'll come in time, Dair, don't worry."
"How is he? Malachite,
I mean."
"He's doing fine...
worried about you. He thinks you won't be back. You should
call him."
"I was planning on
it. I promised him that no matter what we found out, I wouldn't run
away. I was tempted to break that promise at first, but now I can't.
Nor do I want to." She glanced at her watch and then smiled up at
him. "I'd better get going if I don't want to be late for class.
I just... I want you to know that I appreciate this... that you didn't
just let me dangle. Thank you."
They stood up from
the booth and he gave her a quick hug. "Biologically or not, you're
my sister, Dair. There's no way I could let you go through all of
this alone. Will you come to the temple today after class?"
After a moment she
nodded. "Hai, I'll be there. Ja ne, Darien."
"Ja ne, little sister,"
he said with a grin.
