Leave it to Trent Reznor of Nine Inch Nails and filmmaker
David Lynch to create the scariest, freakiest soundtrack of the year, perhaps of
all time.
The soundtrack to Lynch's new movie, "Lost Highway", on Reznor's Nothing
Records, is a masterpiece from beginning to end. It mixes radically different
sounds and artists to create a very eerie vibe, complete with bits of dialogue
from the film.
The songs are also continuously mixed together, instead of having
short breaks between them. That just contributes to the strength of
this soundtrack.
The compact disc kicks off with "I'm Deranged," from legend
David Bowie's new album, titled "Outside." It's a great song that
mixes the sounds of drum and bass with Bowie's trademark
vocals. It fades into an ambient interlude by Reznor, which is over
before you know it.
Trent Reznor (Nine Inch Nails)
Reznor and Nine Inch Nails turn ina new song called "The Perfect
Drug," which is their take on drum and bass. It is easily the best thing
they have done in years.
The film is scored by longtime Lynch collaborator Angelo Badalamenti, and
seven tracks on the CD are snippets of his work, which is nothing short of
scary.
The Smashing Pumpkins turn in a brand new song exclusive to the soundtrack
titled "Eye," and it is a definite winner. It sounds like singer/guitarist Billy
Corgan wrote and performed the song by himself, because the drum parts
sound like a drum machine, and it doesn't sound like a full band backing him
up either. "Eye" has a definite techno sound to it, which is fine by me.
Reznor also recruited ex-Bad Seed member Barry Adamson to score
portions of the movie. Adamson contributed several tracks from last year's
"Oedipus Schmoedipus" album. His avant-garde, jazzy soundscapes lend
themselves perfectly to the vibe of the soundtrack.
