JIM CARREY'S IN LOVE
Jim and Renee photographed at Man On The Moon premiere, Dec. 1999Jim Carrey looks serious about newly acknowledged girlfriend Renee Zellweger. The New York Daily News dishes that the Man on the Moon star presented Zellweger with a Harry Winston diamond ring worth more than $200,000. Although the two are calling it a "friendship ring," buzz is building that it is, in fact, an engagement ring. Even before the two went public with their romance, which began on the set of Me, Myself, and Irene, wedding rumors were in the air.

Jim and Renee photographed at Man On The Moon premiere, Dec. 1999JIM CARREY is cooking up big plans for his 38th birthday on Jan. 17 - he’s going to propose to girlfriend Renee Zellweger! He's even bought a magnificent $80,000 diamond engagement ring at Harry Winston that's sure to wow her. Jim's been putting together a blowout celebration to mark his birthday but is secretly planning to turn the event into an engagement party. And he hopes to marry the "girl of his dreams" on her birthday, April 25.

Jim and Renee photographed at Golden Globe Awards, Jan. 2000Gossip columnists have been linking Jim Carrey to Renee Zellweger for months, but the two have never appeared in public together. Until now. The actor, who as recently as November was telling Vanity Fair what a lonely guy he is, showed up at the Man on the Moon premiere with a shy but happy Zellweger on his arm. Approached by Entertainment Tonight's cameras, a beaming Carrey joked that Zellweger was there to "save him a seat." He added, "She's a wonderful lady." The two hooked up while filming Me, Myself, and Irene for the Farrelly Bros. The film is scheduled to open next June.
A few weeks ago, the New York Post reported that Carrey and Zellweger would be tying the knot soon. At the time, the pair wasn't even acknowledging that they were a couple, but now? Is Carrey ready for a third trip to the altar?
December 22, 1999

It turned out to be an electronic Christmas for RENEE ZELLWEGER -- her boyfriend JIM CARREY splurged on $50,000 worth of high-tech toys for her! Jim convinced the Good Guys store in L.A. to stay open an hour later so he could do all his shopping in private. Lucky Renee will start the New Year with a $15,000 flat screen television that mounts on the wall, an $800 chrome cell phone, a $2,000 digital camera, a $10,000 stereo system and a gaggle of other fabulous gifts.

Jim and Renee photographed at Golden Globe Awards, Jan. 2000Are Jim Carrey and Renee Zellweger eyeing the altar? The New York Post's Page Six dishes that the two are planning a wedding soon.
The 37-year-old actor and 30-year-old actress reportedly got to be more than friends while filming Me, Myself, and Irene for the Farrelly brothers. Carrey's been known to dally with his leading ladies: He met ex-wife Lauren Holly on the set of Dumb and Dumber and reportedly hooked up with Courtney Love while filming Man on the Moon. (Laura Linney of The Truman Show seems to have emerged unscathed.)
How much stock should we put in this tale of impending marriage? Not much, if you rely on the actors' reps. Zellweger's spokesperson denied the rumor, while Carrey's rep Marleah Leslie left the question open. She tells the Post, "I don't discuss my client's personal life."
Zellweger, who is still on screen saying "I do" to Chris O'Donnell in The Bachelor, told Mr. Showbiz just three weeks ago, "I've never thought about [a marriage proposal], ever. I don't care. Isn't that terrible?" She also said of working with Carrey, "We had fun and we clicked and laughed a lot together."

JIM CARREY'S SMOKIN' SEX LIFE
Funnyman Jim Carrey is not only a talented comic on the big screen but also a skilled performer in bed, according to a new biography on the megastar.
An unnamed Toronto publicist seven years his senior who claims to have had sexual relations with Carrey when he was just 21 years old says she was amazed by the young comic's sexual prowess, according to the new book The Joker is Wild by Martin Knelman (Penguin Canada). The mysterious flack says she first met Carrey at a TV conference in Calgary, where she was immediately won over by the goofy comic's rendition of The Police's "Every Breath You Take."
"I just had to have him," she says of Carrey, who would later go on to win the hearts of Hollywood starlets like Lauren Holly and Renee Zellweger. Carrey's steamy relationship with the publicist allegedly continued off-and-on for months, sometimes when Carrey was in Toronto and other times when the publicist went to Los Angeles on business. On at least one occasion, she says, the couple had passionate sex in her car in a Santa Monica parking lot.
"One of the reasons he appreciated her was that she was a great audience — as far as she was concerned, everything he said and did was hilarious," writes author Knelman. "With Jim, she explained happily, you would go to bed laughing, and you would wake up laughing."

NEW ON DVD: LIAR LIAR
Universal also has released a collector's edition of its 1997 Jim Carrey hit "Liar Liar" ($35). Presented in the wide-screen format, the disc includes the trailer, talent bios, photo archives, a better-than-average documentary that features great bits of Carrey mugging, and a lengthy deleted scene that was cut from the beginning of the movie, illustrating just how much of a liar Carrey's attorney character is. The scene, in which he gets a thief off for mugging an old man, is quite funny but, according to director Tom Shadyac, it held up the flow of the film. Though Shadyac is rather low-key, he offers insight into what it is like working with someone so spontaneous as Carrey. Shadyac explains that "Liar Liar" was a far different film for them both because it was more grounded in reality. And as Carrey points out in the documentary, "Liar Liar" marks the first time he got to wear his own hair on screen.

JIM CARREY ENTERS DOCUMENTARY
"Man on the Moon" might not be the only feature treatment that centers on the late Andy Kaufman. Universal and Jersey Films logged over 200 hours of behind-the-scenes footage shot by Lynn Margolis, the quirky comic's girlfriend. The result so fascinated Jersey executives that they want to turn it into a documentary in the vein of "Hearts of Darkness," which chronicled the making of "Apocalypse Now." Jersey execs hope the documentary would capture the spirit of Kaufman, and how Kaufman's spirit captured Carrey - who stayed in character before and after director Milos Forman shot scenes. "Lynn filmed every second of every day of shooting, and you never saw Jim as Jim," said a source. While most actors come to the set and head for a trailer bearing their name, Carrey drove on the lot each day as either Kaufman or his alter-ego, the irritating lounge singer Tony Clifton, each of whom had a separate trailer. Clifton provided more cinematic opportunities: smelling of the salami and limburger cheese he'd rub on his body, Carrey's Clifton was a prankster who put the car of producer-costar Danny DeVito up on blocks, let cockroaches loose in his trailer, and once sealed shut the trailer door. On another occasion, he spied Viacom chairman Sumner Redstone and Paramount executive John Goldwyn lunching and proceeded to serenade the horrified duo, who had no idea it was Carrey and at first tried to confiscate the documentary footage. Carrey also pretended to be Kaufman - as - Anthony - Perkins - as - Norman - Bates' mother, scaring tourists on a tram in front of the Universal lot landmark Bates Motel set.  The documentary also captured Carrey's well-publicized hospital visit after his tussle with grappler Jerry Lawlor, which re-created the latter's feud with Kaufman. Carrey shed his Kaufman act the day he completed shooting, and is now starring in Imagine/Universal's "How the Grinch Stole Christmas," where the challenge is to keep his Grinch character under wraps until the film opens Thanksgiving 2000.

GRINCH:BIG, EXPENSIVE, AND...GERMAN?
The Jim Carrey Grinch Who Stole Christmas vehicle isn't a sleigh ride so far, notes The Hollywood Reporter. The writing team is having trouble coming up with a compelling back story for the children's character, and a landmark loan might just make it the most expensive movie ever made. Or budgeted, at least. Apparently for Grinch screenwriters Peter Seaman and Jeffrey Price, Dr. Seuss' explanation that the Grinch's heart was "three times too small" just won't wash as character motivation in a feature-length, live-action film. Price tells the Reporter that based on the beloved book, they "knew nothing about the Grinch. We had to come up with the answers to why he lives in caves and hates Christmas." And then there's the matter of the enormous German bank loan to Universal pictures. The projected loan for $240 million, which is expected to go through next month, would go to fund the production and marketing cost of Universal and Imagine Entertainment's Grinch adaptation. Although the film's reportedly budgeted for only $100 mil, Hannover Leasing plans to put the rest of the money — or more than half — into promotion and advertising, notes the Reporter. However, the bank is technically estimating the film's budget at $150 million, which would correct the production-to-marketing ratio slightly. For tax purposes, the bank will be named producer of Grinch, along with Galahad Films, a company established only for this project. Technically, Galahad-Hannover Leasing, not Universal, will own the film for eight years, when the investment matures. At that time, Universal will have the option of buying the rights back. It's not the first time Hollywood has relied on German money in deals that favor both foreign production firms and Tinseltown producers. However, the German tax law that allows this type of financial arrangement may be axed or extensively altered later this year. Ow! We're getting a headache from all that transaction talk. Universal executives declined comment on the pending infusion of German coin. The Ron Howard-directed, Brian Grazer-produced film is due in theaters next year.

THE GOD OF COOKERY
In a rare term deal with a screenwriter, 20th Century Fox has inked a first-look pact with former TV scribe Marc Hyman, who recently wrote "The God of Cookery'' for the studio. Under the one-year pact, Hyman must first bring all his ideas and original screenplays to Fox, but he has the freedom to write on any other assignment. He will receive an initial high-six-figure sum for each of his original pieces. "God of Cookery,'' a remake of a Hong Kong comedy about an obnoxious TV cooking show host, is being developed as a starring vehicle for Jim Carrey. Hyman is currently writing a polish of the screenplay, which will soon be submitted to Carrey for approval.

CARREY THROWS 'LIMPET' BACK
BBC Radio reported that Jim Carrey has been "noncommittal'' about the remake of "The Incredible Mr. Limpet'' ever since Steve Oederkerk, a pal, pulled out as director. The studio and producers now will likely turn to Robin Williams or Mike Myers to play the lead role of a mild-mannered man who falls into the ocean and turns into a fish.

CARREY GETS SMART
Seeing as Jim Carrey was once infamous for his talking butt cheeks, it isn't too hard to picture him talking into his shoe … but with good, artistic reason, of course. Carrey could be the star of a big-screen adaptation of the 1960s sitcom Get Smart, reprising Don Adams' role as the inept Agent 86. The Hollywood Reporter says Rob Reiner is in talks to direct. The weekly comedy followed the adventures of CONTROL agent Smart as he worked to foil the devious plans of KAOS (featuring a pre-Love Boat Bernie Kopell as evil Conrad Siegfried). Oooh — who else thinks Elizabeth Hurley would make a great Agent 99 (originally played by Barbara Feldon)? Hollywood heads are still waiting to see if Carrey will approve a rewrite of the 1964 Don Knotts' comedy The Incredible Mr. Limpet, which was turned over to Mulan scribe Rita Hsaio in March.

CARREY'S STAR ON THE HOLLYWOOD WALK OF FAME
Jim Carrey, Don Knotts, Roberta Flack and Sting will get spots on the Hollywood Walk of Fame next year. They and 15 other stars were picked from hundreds of nominations, said Johnny Grant, Hollywood's honorary mayor. The board of the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce approved the list June 10. Sponsors pay $15,000 and, with the exception of posthumous stars, promise that the celebrity will appear for the curbside ceremony.

JIM CARREY NOMINATED AT THE SATURN AWARD
The sci-fi film industry and its fans gather Wednesday for the 25th Annual Saturn Awards, a formerly obscure geekfest for B-movie fans that has lately become a bellwether of hot Hollywood trends. Luminaries from Ray Bradbury to Wes Craven and from Leonard Nimoy to James Woods are expected for the ceremony, which is presented by the Academy of Science Fiction, Fantasy, and Horror Films at the Park Hyatt Hotel in Century City. "When I started this group, these films were looked down on -- especially the sci-fi films," said Donald A. Reed, the academy's founder. "The Saturns aren't as prestigious as an Oscar, obviously - nobody gets US$20 million for their next film because they won - but we love the genre films and these awards are a thank you for bringing us so much pleasure." While the science-fiction best picture award nominations are predictably dominated by dueling asteroids (Armageddon and Deep Impact) and special-effects extravaganzas (Dark City, The X-Files: Fight the Future, Star Trek: Insurrection, and Lost In Space) other categories are surprisingly wide open. Best Fantasy Film pits the porcine adventure, Babe: Pig in the City, against Godzilla devouring Manhattan and the surreal Jim Carrey vehicle, The Truman Show. The Academy is a 600-member group that began almost 30 years ago as a Dracula fan club and branched out into broader terrain a few years later. Award nominees are picked by a board consisting of one-third fans, one-third academics, and one-third film-industry professionals. Awards will be given in 32 categories and special achievement awards will be presented to author Ray Bradbury, director William Freidkin (The Exorcist, The French Connection), director Nathan Juran (Attack of the 50-foot Woman), actor, director, writer James Coburn (Affliction), and film restorer David Sheppard. Ironically, the Academy doesn't have a Web site, so here are the nominees for the top awards:

THE AUSTRALIAN'S STAR
Traditionally, a Star has been somebody whose name alone causes customers to go to the cinema and/or rent a video and/or switch on a particular TV station. But we need to put the measurement of that onto a scientific basis. Under the system I propose, the applicant for Star classification must, during the past five years, have been in at least one film which: a) sold more than $15 million worth of tickets at the cinema; b) was watched by more than two million Australians on television; c) was among the top five most rented videos in any year. The top ten drawcards for Australian audiences over the past five years, measured by the criteria above, are: 1. Tom Hanks (Saving Private Ryan, Forrest Gump, Apollo 13). 2. Will Smith (Independence Day, Men In Black). 3. Leonardo DiCaprio (Titanic, Romeo + Juliet); 4. Sam Neill (Jurassic Park, Merlin). 5. Jim Carrey (Liar Liar, Dumb and Dumber). 6. Helen Hunt (As Good As It Gets, Twister). 7. Bruce Willis (Die Hard With A Vengeance, Armageddon). 8. Robin Williams (Mrs Doubtfire, Jumanji). 9. Nicolas Cage (Face/Off, The Rock). 10. Julia Roberts (My Best Friend's Wedding, first in cinema, then on video).

CARREY REUNITES WITH MASK DIRECTOR ON MITTY
In what shapes up as a "Mask'' reteam, New Line has made a deal for Chuck Russell to rewrite "The Secret Life of Walter Mitty'' and direct Jim Carrey in the starring role originated by Danny Kaye. Russell, who last directed Carrey at New Line in "The Mask,'' will begin working on the script as soon as he completes directing Kim Basinger in the supernatural thriller "Bless the Child'' for Paramount. New Line and producer Samuel Goldwyn Jr. hope Russell will be able to direct Carrey early next year in the starring role of the timid character who, in daydreams, becomes a brave hero. Carrey is currently starring for Peter and Bobby Farrelly in "Me, Myself and Irene'' at Fox, after which he'll move directly into "How the Grinch Stole Christmas!'' for the Imagine team of director Ron Howard and producer Brian Grazer at Universal. Much like the subject matter, "Mitty'' has been the fantasy project at New Line since the studio gained the rights and made a deal to bring in Carrey, who'd previously starred in the studio's $100 million hits "The Mask'' and "Dumb and Dumber.'' It has been a challenge to contemporize the story and bring in the right filmmaker. The project seemed to be on the fast track when Howard and Grazer negotiated to do the film from a script by Lowell Ganz and Babaloo Mandel, but that equation did not work out. New Line executives Richard Saperstein and Michael De Luca, who've been shepherding the film for the studio, hope that Russell, who's represented by the William Morris Agency, will get the film back on the fast track and Carrey into the role that Kaye originated in the 1947 comedy.

JIM CARREY & ASHLEY JUDD IN HOT NEW ROMANCE
Jim Carrey & Ashley Judd
"S-s-s-s-mokin'!"  That famous refrain from Jim Carrey's hit movie "The Mask" is the best way to describe Hollywood's hottest new romance - between the rubber-faced funnyman and "Kiss the Girls" beauty Ashley Judd. "They give new meaning to the saying 'I only have eyes for you,'" declared a source who spotted the couple on a 14-hour date in Los Angeles. An insider revealed: "Jim picked up Ashley at a Beverly Hills hotel and the two went to a romantic lunch at the swank Fenix restaurant in West Hollywood. "Then they went off for a special day in L.A.'s movie theater capital, Westwood. Jim and Ashley saw a new movie and strolled the streets, holding hands, eating ice cream and making each other laugh." During their long afternoon together Jim, 37, and 31-year-old Ashley "were never more than a foot or two apart," said the source. That night the couple went to a birthday party for actress Renee Zellweger at the ultra-trendy 360 Restaurant, said the insider. "Jim's next project is a comedy called 'Me, Myself and Irene' with Renee, and he was proud to show off his new girlfriend to Renee and friends. "Jim and Ashley were attached at the hip the entire night, holding hands, touching each other tenderly and dancing the night away.  "By the time they returned to the hotel, it was after 3 a.m." Jim and Ashley first became attracted to each other on the set of a film they starred in last year, "Simon Birch," the insider disclosed. "In the past several weeks - with neither currently attached romantically to anyone else - the two have been burning up the phone lines. "Ashley has taken to calling Jim and they end up talking and laughing all night."  Said a Nashville source: "Ashley has definitely been looking for a man who can turn her on. Jim Carrey is about as unlikely as you can get - but maybe he's got the charm and the zany ways that will keep her attention for a long time." And Jim told a pal: "Ashley is everything I want in a woman. She's beautiful, smart, talented - and oh so sexy!"

JIM CARRIED AWAY
Some suspected sabotage when star Jim Carrey was a last-minute dropout at Little, Brown's booth at the recent BookExpo in Los Angeles. Carrey, who plays the late stand-up wild man and "Taxi" star Andy Kaufman in an upcoming bio-pic, "Man on the Moon," was supposed to help publicize a Kaufman book due out from the publisher at summer's end. The conspiracy theorists' reasoning: Random House's Dell division is rushing to release a Kaufman biography of its own by the fall.
