A Full-Fledged Horn Day is in the works for the fall in the Toronto area. I am in touch with members of the U of T faculty, Toronto Symphony horns, UMI, Yamaha and others in hopes of setting up a Horn Day, possibly in early November. I would like to include some vendors as well as artists so student and amateur hornists can enjoy this experience. Recent Events A Masterclass with Julie Landsman at the Royal Conservatory of Music in Toronto. This was cancelled due to illness and may be rescheduled in the fall. A concert featuring the Canadian Horn Quartet and Tuba Tyrant took place on a very rainy and cold April 8th evening. The quartet consists of Joan Watson, Harcus Hennigar, Gary Pattison and Christopher Gongos The Tuba Tyrant is J. Scott Irvine who also acted as emcee. The program began with Fanfare by Walter Rein with the quartet joined by students from the University of Toronto. The quartet followed with Prelude and Fugue in a minor (Bach, arr. Shaw). A piece for unaccompanied horn entitled Spain, by Buyanovski wes performed by Harcus Hennigar. Concertant Suite by Danielsson was performed by the University of Toronto Horn Quartet with Tuba soloist, Alicia Broomhead. The second half included Samuel Barber's Adagio as arranged by London, Ontario hornist Ron George. Bozza's Suite for four horns in F . A Celtic folksong, Ho Ro My Nut Brown Maiden arranged by Gary Pattison. Two more of Gary's fine arrangements followed. A Bunny Overture and Oz constituted his tribute to Hollywood. The grand finale came in the form of Scott Irvine's signature tuba solo, Clarinet Polka accompanied by a large horn ensemble. A most enjoyable evening! The Windsor Symphony, May 11. Four Fabulous French Horns. Martin Limoges, Tamara Kosinski, Sasha Gorbashew, Nicole Alexander. The Schumann Konzertstuck for four horns. Wow! Martin Limoges is a force to be recconed with. All four horns performed beautifully, well beyond just "making it through" this piece. They almost made it seem effortless. Bravo!! Horn Day, May 19. James MacDonald invited numerous Toronto area hornists to his home in Sonya, Ontario for an afternoon of horn playing and socialising. About twenty hornists arrived from as far away as Ottawa and Montreal (by way of Boston). Local Paxman representative Peter Samuelson had a few horns for trial as well as more than twenty E.Schmid bells. James' brother John was visiting from Germany where he is principal solo horn of the Radio Symphony Orchestra Frankfurt am Main. He spends some time each summer at the Orford Arts Centre giving masterclasses. Jamie Sommerville, who also participates at Orford, was in Sonya for the afternoon as well. (hinted at above) I got a chance to get reacquainted with some hornists I hadn't seen in twenty years or more and to meet some people I had only corresponded with (George Lloyd). |
