Equitation
As an important part of the Hunter/Jumper discipline, Equitation has become increasingly popular over the years.

Definition
Equitation is judged on the rider's skills, position, and horsemanship.  Just as hunters put the emphasis on the horse, equitation is designed to assess the rider's ability to handle their horse and make decisions.
Medal Classes
Both equitation and Medal classes fall under the category of Equitation.  Medal tests take the idea of equitation a step further by having the top riders in the class perform tests, such as riding unfamiliar horses, riding without stirrups, or performing difficult jump courses at the judge's discretion.

Equitation and Medal classes can be found in both local and major A-rated competitions.  USA Equestrian, the governing body of America's premier show circuits, has many major medal classes to offer to riders of varying disciplines.  A win in any of these medals takes years of dedication, training, and a little bit of luck.

Medal classes are often sponsored by an association.  Some medal classes offered at USA Equestrian rated competitions are:

-
Eisers/Pessoa USAEq Medal

- BET/United States Equestrian Team Medal

- American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA) Maclay

- USAEq Pony Medal

- State Line Tack National Children's Medal

- Ariat Adult Medal
Divisions
Equitation, like the hunters, is done in divisions, which are usually based on age or ability (ability is based on the number of wins the rider has earned in Equitation).  Each division may have 1-3 jumping classes, complete with one flat class.
Attire and Turnout
Like the hunters, Equitation is very conservative.  Horses should be braided neatly and the rider should be turned out appropriately.  A spotless, classic appearance
can win extra points from the judge, and says that the rider takes pride in what he/she does.

Tack
Since the emphasis is not on the horse, certain items are allowed in the Equitation ring that would not be allowed in the Hunter ring.  Leg wraps, bell boots, and jumping boots are acceptable in equitation.
Square pads, elevator bits, gag bits, and certain other tack is
not allowed.  Contact your local show association for clarification on acceptable tack.
