A short story I wrote, "Murder by Silicon", was nominated for a 2002 Devvie Award (Excellence in Digital Expression, the yearly award at Deviantart) in two categories: Most Original Prose and Best Overall Prose.

It won neither (losing out by fewer than ten votes, or under 1 percent, in "Most Original", and placing third in "Best Overall"), but it was the only prose piece among those nominated as "Best Overall" that was also nominated for another award.

Go check it out -- Murder by Silicon. While you're at it, go see the winners: Devvies results.

Old News

A short story I wrote, "Murder by Silicon", has been selected as one of the daily features for March 5th, 2002, over at Deviantart. Here's what they had to say:

"`For a price, Mr. Tlogmer, I can cure you of your disease. But more than that' - he leans towards me and lowers his voice to an energized whisper – `I can make you one of the first immortal beings to walk the face of this planet.'" And with that, ben leads us into a fantastic, well-written tale of hard core science fiction called Murder By Silicon. Turn off the SciFi Channel...it’s ben’s turn.

. . .

(For those of you looking for the song, here it is.
Oh, and check out the cool new scroll bar and other stuff.)

New Weblog

Check it out. It's got very cool posts on entropy, music and the brain, and other stuff. Plus the usual mindless rambling. In older news...

. . .

Wow. It's finally happened.

After a year of getting nothing done, we're finally putting out the first issue of the Lexicon. Via email. Send a message to huronlexicon@hotmail.com to sign up.

Oh, and be sure to check out the new Lexicon website, a place of my own design that looks much much cooler than the page you're viewing now.

The content is, I admit, relatively dissimilar to what's on this site--but I'm feeling nostalgic (and lazy), so I'll keep everything below as it is (consider it my personal webpage -- lots of cool stories). Enjoy. Oh, and disregard the email and locker information; I haven't checked either in six months. You can contact me at yatesbl1@online.emich.edu if you want.

The Lexicon is an independent, student-run magazine devoted exclusively to student events, science fiction, politics, movies, computer games, philosophy, religion, sports, and anything else we can think of.

Here's how it works: You submit a story or article to us (either email it to huron_lexicon@yahoo.com or drop it in locker 43-137). If we like it, we'll print it, and put it on this website. If not, we can tell you why and work with you to change it.

For a taste of what The Lex will be like when it first comes to press later this year, here are two short science fiction stories, On the Division of Labor and Life, the beginning of a detective story, Close Shave, the beginning of a horror story, Carnival, a standard, character-driven story, Particle Physics, and two satires, TV Commercial to be Aired on CNN, and Bathroom Smoking: A Possible Solution. Enjoy.
