I enjoy the canaries for their beautiful song, the Gouldians for their vivid colors, and owl finches because they are just so darn cute! The bird room is a lively,cheerful place even during the cold, grey days of the midwestern winter.
Half my canaries are red factor or rose ivory pairs and the others are American Singers of various colors, including green, yellow, and green and yellow mixed. I feel the strongest song is found in the greens and the green and yellow mixed birds. Even though some people prefer the yellow color, American Singers are bred for song, not color, so I will never try to breed all the green color out of my birds!
At this time, I have 2 pairs of adult Gouldians, as well as the babies they have raised this year. One pair is a normal red headed pair, but one of their babies is a visual yellow color mutation. The papa of the other pair is a blue mutation with a black head and mama is a white breasted normal with a red head. Therefore, no matter what color their babies are when they color in, they are all split to the blue mutation and the white breast mutation. If paired with an unrelated mate that is also split to blue, they could have an occasional visually blue baby! Both pairs are excellent parents and have raised all their babies themselves.
