by H. Witmyer Hosea 4:6 My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge: One thing that a Christian doesn’t like to hear is that there is a error in the scriptures. There seems to be a big error between two scriptures, but is this really true? Let’s look at these seemingly conflicting passages. JESUS GIVES A COMMAND In several of the Gospels, Jesus gives His parting words to His disciples as He leaves this earth. Matthew 28: 18 And Jesus came and spake unto them, saying, All power is given unto me in heaven and in earth. 19 Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost: Mark 16:15 And he said unto them, Go ye into all the world, and preach the gospel to every creature. 16 He that believeth and is baptized shall be saved; but he that believeth not shall be damned. Luke 24:47 And that repentance and remission of sins should be preached in his name among all nations, beginning at Jerusalem. 48 And ye are witnesses of these things. 49 And, behold, I send the promise of my Father upon you: but tarry ye in the city of Jerusalem, until ye be endued with power from on high. Here Jesus told His disciples to go into the whole world and baptize in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy ghost. DID THE DISCIPLES DISOBEY? What did the disciples do when they first started baptizing people at the beginning of the Church? Acts 2:38 Then Peter said unto them, Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost. Acts 8:16 (For as yet he was fallen upon none of them: only they were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus.) Acts 19:5 When they heard this, they were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus. It seems tht the disciples disobeyed Jesus by baptizing people in Jesus name when He told them to baptize in the name of the Father, and the son, and of the Holy Ghost. Is this a error in the scriptures? Did Jesus tell the disciples wrong? Did the disciples get the message wrong? What is going on here? THE ANSWER There is no error, the disciples did just what Jesus told them to do. They understood what Jesus was telling them. We must be sure we have the facts about a matter right. Look at the following scripture. John 7:46 The officers answered, Never man spake like this man. 47 Then answered them the Pharisees, Are ye also deceived? 48 Have any of the rulers or of the Pharisees believed on him? 49 But this people who knoweth not the law are cursed. 50 Nicodemus saith unto them, (he that came to Jesus by night, being one of them,) 51 Doth our law judge any man, before it hear him, and know what he doeth? 52 They answered and said unto him, Art thou also of Galilee? Search, and look: for out of Galilee ariseth no prophet. The Pharisees were right that there was no prophet of Galilee. What they didn’t know was He wasn’t born there but in Bethlehem. Not knowing the true facts can cause us to make a wrong judgment just like the Pharisees did. THE DISCIPLES KNEW Acts 4:12 Neither is there salvation in any other: for there is none other name under heaven given among men, whereby we must be saved. Ephesians 1:20 Which he wrought in Christ, when he raised him from the dead, and set him at his own right hand in the heavenly places, 21 Far above all principality, and power, and might, and dominion, and every name that is named, not only in this world, but also in that which is to come: 22 And hath put all things under his feet, and gave him to be the head over all things to the church, 23 Which is his body, the fulness of him that filleth all in all. John 5:43 I am come in my Father's name, and ye receive me not: if another shall come in his own name, him ye will receive. Hebrews 1:4 Being made so much better than the angels, as he hath by inheritance obtained a more excellent name than they. Colossians 3:17 And whatsoever ye do in word or deed, do all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God and the Father by him. Isaiah 9:6 For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given: and the government shall be upon his shoulder: and his name shall be called Wonderful, Counsellor, The mighty God, The everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace. KNOWLEDGE The disciples knew that God had taken His name (the name above every name) and given it to His Son. The name of God is Jesus, so the name (One name) of Father, Son, and Holy Ghost is Jesus. If this is not true than We do have a error, a contradiction in the scriptures. |
