Vedic Astrology and Gemstones

The celestial planets constantly emit positive and negative vibrations that reach each of us. The branch of science that studies how these vibrations affect each person both for good and for ill is Vedic Astrology.

Brihat Samhita of Acharya Varaha Mihir contains detailed descriptions about the gemstones, their purity, colors and qualities. Swami Yukteshwar in the Autobiography of a Yogi stated that faultless gems worn in contact with the skin are the most beneficial for astrological and remedial purposes. More modern studies can be found today in astrological and Ayurvedic medicine writings.

Gems are similar to a lightning rod. They are radioactive crystals that filter our their particular rays. Human body is a combination of minerals, chemicals etc. Gems create a protective field around the body, regulating which vibrations from the celestial bodies are absorbed by the human body. In time, the proper gemstones can bring about changes in the mind and the body. In addition to prayer, meditation, service etc., the astrological jewelry is another way to achieve spiritual progress.

Navratna

According to the Vedic Astrology Ruby, Pearl, Coral, Emerald, Yellow or White Sapphire, Diamond, Blue Sapphire, Gomedha and Cat's Eye are the Navratna. Each of these gems is used for different purposes depending on a person's characteristics and ailment. The gems are recommended by an astrologer or the family priest or the spiritual guru.

Ruby (Manik)

In India the ruby is worn to promote health and happiness. It was believed to have the power to foretell danger by a loss of color and brilliance. Ruby is used for strengthening the heart, improving digestion, promoting circulation. Ruby strengthens the will, promotes independence, gives insight and enhances power.

The engagement ring of Sarah Ferguson, the Duchess of York was from a ruby. The extraordinary Timur Ruby, in the collection of Queen Elizabeth weighs 352.50 carats. It is inscribed with the names of several of the previous owners, who were Mughal emperors.

Diamond (Heera)

It is also referred to as the King stone. It has been popularly used in crown jewels of royalties. A flawless diamond is colorless like ice. No two diamonds are alike. The diamond is found in colorless to yellow, rosy, blue, green, pink and black colors. It strengthens the kidneys and reproductive organs and gives protection in severe diseases. The gem is said to be an amplifier. If the wearer is good, it amplifies their goodness. If the wearer is selfish or evil, it will amplify those qualities as well.

The 108 carat colorless and oval shaped brilliant cut Kohinoor diamond is believed to be from the Golconda mines near Hyderabad. It was believed that whoever possessed the diamond would rule the world. Queen Victoria willed that the diamond would pass down to the wife of the king due to the belief that it is inauspicious for the men. It is now in the crown of Queen Elizabeth and is displayed at the Tower of London.

The history of the extraordinary French Blue gemstone which was later named the Hope Diamond began when the French traveller, Jean Baptiste Tavernier, purchased a 112 3/16-carat stone in India. This diamond was most likely from the Kollur mines near Hyderabad. The Hope diamond has been associated with back luck. It's thought to have been stolen from an Indian idol. It is now on display in a museum in Washington, DC.

Emerald (Panna)

It is beautiful deep velvety green to grass green. Emerald calms mental agitation, regulates the nervous system, helps stop nerve pain and improves speech and intelligence. It promotes healing, energizes the breath, strengthens the lungs. It is good for cancer and other degenerative diseases

Among the seven heavens of the Islamic religion, the first was made of emerald. The Moghuls of India loved emeralds so much they inscribed them with sacred text and wore them as talismans. These are called Moghul emeralds. One of the talismanic emerald has the Persian inscription: "He who possesses this charm shall enjoy the special protection of God." Legend has it that Jesus Christ used an emerald bowl at the Last Supper.

Blue Sapphire (Neelam or Pushparag)

It is antitumor and antifat and good for reducing therapy. It strengthens the bones, increases longevity and helps calms the nerves and emotions.

The beautiful Star of Asia is one of the world's great star sapphires. This 330 carat gemstone from Burma is known for its huge size, intense color and sharp star. It is said to have once belonged to the Maharaja of Jodhpur in India. It is on display in a museum in Washington, DC. The engagement rings of Princesses Diana and Elizabeth Taylor were of sapphire. For the Catholic church, sapphires were the gems of choice for the rings of their bishops and cardinals.

Cat's Eye (Lehsuniya)

This is considered a stone with spiritual emphasis. It is good for promoting psychic and spiritual perception. It is a nerve stimulant and is helpful for mental disorders. It is the gemstone of seers and astrologers. It should always be worn after a trial.

Pearl (Moti)

It is also referred to as the Queen stone. It is common custom in India for the brides to wear a nose ring of pearls at the time of marriage ceremony. It strengthens the female reproductive system, improves fertility and calms the emotions. This is believed to ensure a happy married life and protect from widowhood. Pearls may be natural or cultured or imitation pearls.

Natural Pearls

A natural pearl is formed in the wild by the random intrusion of a natural irritant into a mollusk's shell, without the intervention of man. It is an organic gemstone.

The Nizams of Hyderabad loved pearls. The Nizams wore ropes of pearls studded with diamonds as part of state regalia. The princesses were covered with pearls and weighed against pearls on their birthdays. Mir Osman Ali Khan stored pearls and diamonds in sacks in the basement chambers.

The largest pearl weighs 14 pounds and is 5.5 inches in diameter. Kept in a vault in San Francisco, USA it was valued at more than $4,000,000 in 1971. Elizabeth Taylor has the La Peregrina, one of the largest and most historic pearls in existence, a pear shaped drop weighing 203.84 grains, once owned by the Spanish royal family.

Cultured Pearls

A cultured pearl is also grown by nature but with the assistance of man. Kokichi Mikimoto of Japan came up with the cultured pearl in the 1920's. This process involves the insertion of a "nucleus" into the oyster. The oyster (sip) is then carefully nurtured for the desired type of pearl.

Hyderabad (also known as the City of Pearls) is one of the largest pearl drilling centers in India. This delicate art of drilling pearls requires high skill and patience and has been practiced for generations. The pearls are boiled for a few days and processed prior to placing them in glass sun boxes. Grading is performed to make the pearls ready for threading.

The quality of cultured pearls varies and is judged by the pearl's luster (the inner glow of the pearl), surface (look for spots, blemishes), shape, color and size (other things being equal, the larger the better).

Imitation Pearls

An imitation pearl is a manufactured product composed of any material or materials that simulate in appearance a natural or cultured pearl. Glass (seem heavy) and plastic (seem light) are used to manufacture imitation pearls and they are inexpensive.

Blood Coral (Munga)

Corals are found in red, white and sindoori colors. Red coral is the most common. Coral is organic and is created in the oceans. Protect coral from scratches and sharp blows. Coral is imitated by plastic, glass, porcelain, and stained bone. Natural coral has a distinctive wood grain texture which can help identify it as the real thing.

This gemstone is very beneficial to the physical body. Red coral strengthens the blood and the reproductive system, improves energy and calms emotion, builds flesh and muscle, gives courage and improves work capacity.

Yellow or White Sapphire (Pukhraj)

In India, it is believed that if there are obstructions in getting a suitable match for a girl, she gets married early by wearing a unblemished yellow sapphire. This gemstone is considered by many as the most effective for promoting all round health and well being. It gives energy and vitality and regulates the hormonal system.

Hessonite Garnet (Gomedha)

In India the garnet was felt to be a guard against poison and disease, and was worn to promote health and cheerfulness. This stone is recommended for almost everyone as it counters the negative influences of illusion.
