Title: Obsequy for the
Remains of SP, OhGr.
- praying for a good show early on ;
- Ogre entering Stage
Beginning Observations:
The band arrived a little late
and some of the early stage & sound setup could be seen & heard
thru the front door of the venue. Many fans arrived early to line
up to get into the Continental. Some had no money to buy tickets
but were satisfied to hang outside. A local Buffalo band opened and
Touring Opener Hate Dept. were also on the bill. Upon our entrance
to the venue, there were no security staff to do camera/weapon checks.
The highly demanded OhGr 12" Vinyl was not available anymore by 10pm.
Many shirts, posters & CDs were stocked for purchase. Apparently,
it was Ogre who made the call to make it an All Ages show being changed
from 21+ only previously.

Piling thru most of the current
WELT CD except Pore, the Ogre added a few tunes from their forthcoming
LP as well[Dog, Hi-Lo, Watergate & Magic]. Our stop on the current
US Summer Tour had about 275 attendees sweating as we all baked before
and during the set. A bank of large video monitors worked some Process
themes, night lights scenes, scrambled porn, & slickly blurred image
effects as well as freshly made content for the Tour by Bill & Tim.
During Cracker live, Bill's stop motion digi video & animation masterpiece
was shown. Simple lights rounded out the stageshow as this was not
meant to be a comparison to a more theatrical Skinny Puppy performance.
William Morrison an established Video Director, has been nominated for
Canadian JUNO Awards in recent years for his work with Matthew Good Band.
He has worked with Skinny Puppy on Videos in the past(Killing Game &
see Process link below).

Ogre still hadn't grown out of
his army fatigue pants and combat boots that he wore last year at the DoomsDay
Festival. Added stagewear this year was a commando style ammo-vest
that he did not remove and added stage props. Papal/Religion, Violence,
Military, Evil & Corporate Rock BS motifs were presented throughout.
These are not new themes in Rock Music but what else is there? Making
fun of the establishment, Ogre donned Monkey, Bishop & Demon masks.
A high point was new tune 'Hi-Lo' as all of the new songs actually rocked
more than the released material! Getting the most crowd reaction
was Minus with crowd chant "PAIN CONTACT BACKWARD PAIN". Ogre had
started to strain his vocal chords earlier in the Tour(about Minneapolis),
and has limited much of his daily speech to only Performance Gigs to help
with the recovery. Some banter with the audience, brief pop song choruses and derogitory remarks about attending Canadian fans filled some of the dead-air gaps between songs.

The band was energetic onStage
but their current 30 city club tour has shown their weariness on the busiest
dates. The preselected Video complimented & subtitled many of
the compositions performed. Added live audience video projection
elated the crowd towards the front of the stage area as their motions &
gestures were displayed to the attendees at the end of the evening.
A treat for everyone was a rendition of Frozen Sky as the closing track.
This is from cEvin Key's upcoming Solo release[on Metropolis Records Aug.14.01]
with Ogre featured on guest vocals. Ogre actually sounds puppy-ish[not
like any WELT material] here. This foreshadows future hopes on more
collaborations as this was the first post-puppy attempt. WELT started
out being Ogre's first post-puppy departure project and seems to be the
one that brings him back to collaborate again with cEvin Key.

OhGr's 'WELT' was re-created by
Nivek Ogre & Mark Walk and completed just a year ago. This show
was presented after OhGr's WELT CD was released earlier this year.
WELT entered and made it to #2 in the German Alt Charts after release thanks
to the numerous DarkWave crowd there. A full article could be written
on the delays in getting this release to the public. OhGr live would
be the first post-Puppy performance Ogre has done on his own Bill.
This only added to the furvor that fans had prior to this band playing
their town. Being billed as 'the Remains of Skinny Puppy', this Tour
does not feature SP tracks on the Setlist. Songs on this Setlist
did not resemble the early Ogre+Al W.E.L.T. noise track Noreen.
In Buffalo, the Continental is
a vintage establishment with a very small dressing room/lounge. The
band preferred to prepare for the show in the rear of the building[backyard]
as it was much cooler than the heat of the audience filled bar. As touring
Bandmates pogo'd together, the intro music expired. An instrumental/sample
song Chicks Are For Power brought out the musicians and later industrial
legendary vocalist Ogre with a tribal demonic-Pope costume on. Cheers
came as album track Suhleap started and the audience could hear Ogre sing.
It was the reason why most people came this evening as he gestured on.
Skinny Puppy founder cEvin Key was brought in as guest drummer for this
tour which was an instant invite for many SP fan participants as well.
Key was hidden behind his massive Drumosaurus, as he prefers it.
cEvin has toured post-Puppy with bands DVOA & his own Download project.
Rounding out the touring band were ex-KMFDM/MDFMKer Tim Skold on Bass,
and Process members Loki der Quaeler and William 'Bill' Morrison on Keys
& Explorer Guitar respectively. This touring band is much more
a family than any Pigface Tour where Ogre was present. Unfortunately,
Mark Walk opted not to tour as he had done as well in the past not touring
with Ruby or Pigface.
Tour standard outro tune 'Dueling
Banjos' along with house lights on made sure that the crowd could not request
any more live music. This tour did not take them outside of the borders
of the US but plans will be made earlier deferred Canadian Dates as well
as a few select EuroDates and possibly Japan. OhGr's second LP for Spitfire Records is already
recorded and it's release will likely happen after Tour & Promo commitments
conclude for WELT. Backstage, the bandmates were eager to answer
questions, give autographs & give Photo Ops. They did not have
much to add in terms of what would happen next as their main focus was
on finishing the current tour. Rounding out the 'team' was Glen Reely
on soundboard with the help of Frank Verschuuren(of LPD fame) & Jolly
Rodger as Tour Production Manager. Not nearly as grand as being treated
to a SP show but one can only hope. OhGr is also a very solid live
band playing excellent renditions of their new & unreleased material
- don't miss them if you have a chance !!
later, OhGr band Members:
Bill, Ogre & Loki backstage
Most fans either departed or went
upstairs to the 'dance club' part of the building once the show was over.
After the OhGr stage gear was removed a local band 'played' to round out
the evening. The audience at this point was merely the cleanup staff
as they did an abominable cover 'Safety Dance'. Exit stage left...
