The Grey Bruce North Dufferin Baseball League association website run by Willie Schwippl at gbbl@mailcity.com is no longer updated by him or that region's convenor. Instead, I have taken the liberty to add the content of that website to the bottom of the Owen Sound Athletics team website here for those who wish to see the history fo those leagues pre year 2000 - Robbie Mack
Site Amalgamates With North Dufferin Baseball League On The Web
April 1, 2000 --
The Grey Bruce Baseball League's Offical website, right here, has formally announced it will now be also home to the North Dufferin Baseball League, sharing house due to a new amalgamation cyberwise with the 13 team, 10 town, over half a century over organized play. Though we will continue to be the website to all franchises of the Grey Bruce Baseball League, being Chesley Chiefs, Kincardine Cardinals, Listowel Legionnaires, Port Elgin White Sox and Owen Sound Rams, we will now include the North Dufferin Baseball League's franchises of Beaver Valley Beavers, Clarksburg Blues, Collingwood Blues, Collingwood Cubs, Flesherton Senior Rangers, Flesherton Junior Rangers, Creemore Braves, Ivy Leafs, Lisle Astros, New Lowell Senior Knights, New Lowell Junior Knights, Orillia Majors and Stayner Squires. This will enable all teams in both leagues equal and just media and scouting coverage that we believe they deserve. All elements of this merger have been conceived and implemented locally with the best interest of the local community at heart. We have been the only constant in a very changing system and will continue to serve and provide the kind of local service that each affected community has come to expect, no matter what unfolds. We say this with confidence, news here has been and will continue to be provided locally, recently our website has enjoyed tremendous success in serving the readers of this area and beyond. We anticipate many more years of that success. With this expansion, there is no need to fear about the future of their local product. If you have a beef or a gripe, email us. If you have kudos or a thank you, email us. If you have a scoop or want to help us report on any of the affected leagues or teams, email us. Again, we ARE locally based and SUPPORT local reporters of G.B.B.L. and N.D.B.L. news. We are proud to expand and share this site from its former 5 teams to its now current 18 and will continue to cover the bases, as it has since 1997.

Add Two More Franchises To Score On Local Talent
November 1, 1999 --
The Grey Bruce Baseball League will continue to be an affiliate league to all franchises of the Inter-County Major Senior Baseball League but now the scouts have to get faster to catch up to the, ever-so-quick, fleeting local talent. The reason is because of the two new agressive expansion franchises: St. Thomas Storm and Waterloo Tigers. With already-made rivals in the Majors for the Storm and the Panthers for the Tigers (plus an added bonus of the Werewolves in the Majors-Storm rivalry). The reasons to start scouting all 35/29-year-old and younger prospects in the South Western Ontario region, the most talented region for baseball in Canada, according to majority of N.C.A.A. and Major League Scouting Service sources, has started to mount to such a rise, that almost every player has been contacted at least once - and as it looks for now, things aren't going to change.
United West Versus East Bi-Annual All Star Game Cancelled For 1999
September 9, 1999 --
The 2nd Bi-Annual Georgian Bay Regional All Star Classic, featuring the best and brightest baseball prospects from Huron/Bruce/Grey/Wellington/Perth Counties, to be played on 9/7/99 in Listowel, Ont. at John Bell Memorial Park was cancelled. Plans are under way to have it replayed next year but have not yet been announced. One such plan has two games being played, the 1999 game during the spring and the 2000 during the fall.
No Provincial Ontario High School Baseball Leagues
October 3, 1999 --
Relatively few Canadian natives have made the majors - a reflection of very, very short summers, a paucity of places to play since overall apathy destroyed the outlaw leagues and old town teams and with only one high school baseball league existing in Quebec and none in several other provinces much hadn't changed up to the point. In Ontario particularly, High school baseball programs have flourished in the Metro Toronto area since 1979, when four schools experimented with a short schedule. There are now close to seventy schools playing a spring schedule that culminates in a championship game played at the SkyDome, prior to a regular season Blue Jays game. The winning team receives the "Blue Jays Cup" but that's Toronto. Provincially, without other Ontario High School Baseball leagues, which is the current reality, that leaves out the rest of a vast, great province as a whole, which has many prospects worthy of soucting. So as far as recruiting wise goes, that makes summer leagues, like the Grey Bruce Baseball League and North Dufferin Baseball League, the most important institution to be used in order for all areas local talent to get that needed look and chance at transition to the next step.
New Grey Bruce Counties Champions Crowned In Perth County
September 1, 1999 --
The Carr Farms Trophy, The Championship trophy of the Grey Bruce Baseball League, now belongs in the hands of a team that resides in neither. Perth County's pride and joy ,as of Tuesday night, The Listowel Legionnaires Juniors fought hard and long all year for the chance of earn a berth in the G.B.B.L. Final and a shot at the previous defending, three-peat champions from 1996-1998, The Owen Sound Rams Seniors. Well, they took the chance and then some, going the full distance of a fifth, final and deciding game in their best of five series. Unlike the full five final frenzy of '98 in which Owen Sound outlasted The Port Elgin White Sox, This year's final game showed it was the Green and Gold that wanted the silverware more as the Rams fell 15-8 to the Long-Lasting Legionnaires. While Steve Leary and Ryan Doig combined for the win, allowing 8 hits, 4 walks and 4 struck out, it was the league's batting champion Chris Johnson who smacked a 2 run homer and later a full based grand slam out of John Bell Memorial Park, making for most of Owen Sound's offense. But with Andrew Strutt and Don Bartley sharing a huge loss, giving up 17 hits, 3 walks and only a lone strikeout, not much can go right for Rams' Manager/League Convener Terry Keeling, as he watched his dynasty go as quick as the 2 doubles and single Ryan Matheson hit to lead his club offensively. The Series, 3-2, stayed in G.B.B.L. fashion, being both close and undecided til the end.

Due to Owen Sound Rams' O.B.A. commitments to W.O.B.A. Senior "C" Division playdowns against St. Mary's/Stratford, who beat Owen Sound, 8-0 in Game 1 and 12-2 Game 2 in '98's series, The Western All-Star team, which represents Huron/Bruce/Grey/Wellington/Perth Counties, will change its team roster format of selection to the maximum top 3 players and/or pitchers from each team in area base league(s) from the former format of top 3 players/pitchers from each team in area base league(s) except only 2 from the last placed team in league(s) but still maintaining the mandate to select a player from every talent base area fairly via representative or independent. The players being replaced on the first team are: Dave Reid, Chris Johnson and pitcher Wade Walsh. Replacements to be announced before game time. As well, selection of the players from the Grey Bruce Baseball League will be drafted in this format: First, Listowel Legionnaires, Second, Chesley Chiefs, Third, Kincardine Cardinals and last, Port Elgin White Sox. Under current format all team except Port Elgin get an extra player on the roster. Also the Rams' second team selections were: Andrew Strutt, Brad Whalley and pitcher Jeff Cooper and their third team players were: Tim Dearden and pitcher Don Bartley. The Eastern All-Star team, which represents Simcoe/Dufferin/Grey Counties, will maintain their original format, which is the unchanged top player and/or pitcher.
North Dufferin Baseball League Cancels All All Star Games
July 27, 1999 --
North Dufferin Baseball League has decided, after a general meeting, to cancel their Junior and Senior All Star games, that were to be played in Stayner, Ont. on 7/25/99. No annoucement has been made whether the games will be replayed.
Hunt For Local Talent Gets Tougher With New League
January 21, 1999 --
The Grey Bruce Baseball League will be the premier local farm league providing top players to the new expansion franchise from the Frontier Baseball League's London Werewolves. The Werewolves, formerly Kalamazoo Kodiaks, will be looking long and hard for Canadian talent, as the Inter-County Major Senior Baseball League have locked up much of the semi-pro/non-paid players but the Frontier League is an independent professional, an option for those who wish to waive their amateur status. As well, London has promised they will be highly competitive compared to when they were at their last venue. The Grey Bruce Baseball league will continue to be an affiliate league to franchises of the Inter-County Major Senior Baseball League.
Local prospects picked by Inter-County Major Senior Baseball League teams
April 27, 1999 --
Two former G.B.B.L. and Flesherton Rangers system players were fortunate enough to have been selected by Inter-County Major Senior Baseball League teams. Both P Tim Goheen of the Flesherton Midget Rangers and OF Joshua Eriksen of the Flesherton Junior Rangers had the honour and were given invites to try out with their respective I.C.M.B.L. squads. Goheen, whose last amateur play was starting with the Saginaw Valley (Mich) State University Cardinals of the N.C.A.A. Division II, got the papers from the Toronto Maple Leafs Baseball Club and Eriksen, whose last amateur play was starting with the Western All Stars of the 1st Bi-Annual Georgian Bay Regional All-Star Classic, got the call from the Hamilton Cardinals Baseball Club. All the best from everyone connected with those special teams, that particular system and this proud league.
Rammin' Away A Three-peat
August 26, 1998 --
The Owen Sound Rams made it official, becoming the first team in Grey Bruce Baseball League's 9 year history to three-peat a Championship Title and take home the Carr Farms Trophy as the champs. This year's team took out the hard-to-beat, never-say-never Port Elgin White Sox, in the best of 3 series, 2-1. Previously, they had to attack The Hanover Huricanes, not once in 1997, but twice in 1998. Both at a 2 game straight sweep in a best of 3 for both the trophy and the title.
One Less Talent Feeding Team For 1998
April 21, 1998 --
The Grey Bruce Baseball League will have one less Inter-County Major Senior Baseball League team to send talent towards. The Startford Hillers franchise has folded for this coming season and it is unknown whether or not the team will be back in 1999. As a positive, the I.C.M.B.L. season will go one with the Brantford Red Sox, Guelph Royals, Hamilton Cardinals, Kitchener Panthers, London Majors and Toronto Maple Leafs, regulars from the season before.

1st Bi-Annual Georgian Bay Regional All Star Classic A Blast
August 28, 1997 --
The 1st Bi-Annual Georgian Bay Regional All-Star Classic went off with a bang during G.B.B.L. Championship week as The Western All Stars, consisting of the premier players from the Huron/Bruce/Grey/Perth Counties, came to Owen Sound to play The Eastern All Stars, consisting of the top players from the Owen Sound Selects, at T.W. Park. The game was tied at 2 until Andrew Kivassari of the Kincardine Cardinals, repesenting the Western All Stars, hit a solo homer, that hit the top bar of the right field fence, bounced once on the bar again until finding its resting spot in "Da Woods" behind the fence. It was the lone home run of the contest. That play overwhelmingly won him the Most Valuable Player of the game. Unfortunately for the West, the game wasn't over. The Eastern All Stars came from behind to add another run in the 9th. Steve Quesnel came in as the tying run for the East. Despite protests by both teams, and a botched scuffle between the two teams then between a Eastern player and an adult fan, the umpires decided to call the game, though the contest still wasn't decided and at least 4 more hours of daylight. Even after the decision, fans and players alike could be heard yelling and bickering, disguntled by the call. This will also be the last time fans will see such an event for another two years, until 1999, as it is a bi-annual exhibition contest. As well, the M.V.P. award was not given out at the last moment, due to the fact the Eastern All-Stars may boycott if it remained a memorial trophy to Tip O'Neill. James Edward Tip O'Neill, a native of Woodstock, Ont., holds the highest batting average in baseball history, setting the all-time record, batting .492 in 1887. He also led major leagues in hits, doubles, total bases and slugging aveage. The Western All-Stars conceded and only named a M.V.P. as a title.

As well, feel free to check out these three personal favourite Canadian Ontarian Amateur Baseball team sites, read up on and bookmark them, if you wish:
First, above all else, is the Owen Sound Athletics of the North Dufferin Baseball League, which is at the Single Eh 'A' status in Canada-Ontario standards. Formerly the Owen Sound Rams of the Grey Bruce Baseball League, this team has seen championships up until 1999 and knows their game but 2002 is their first year in the Dufferin Simcoe counties league and all are expecting the young and inexperienced team to have growing pains early. The Athletics site can be found at http://www.owensoundathletics.cjb.net or http://www.oocities.org/i_c_m_b_l_on_ca/owensoundathletics.html
Second, is the Listowel Legionaires of the Inter County Junior Baseball League, which is at the Double Eh 'AA' status in Canada-Ontario standards. Formerly playing in the Grey Bruce Baseball League and before that in Inter County Major Baseball League before expanding in the mid western Ontario inter counties league in 2000, this team is an interesting one that plays professionally but has a down home rural style of game which keeps it humble. They also are the answer to what team won the last Grey Bruce counties league championship before the league folded in 2000. The Legionaires site can be found at http://www.jr-icba.com/listowel.htm or http://www.oocities.org/i_c_m_b_l_on_ca/listowellegionnaires.html
Third, and lastly, is the Barrie Baycats of the Inter County Major Baseball League, which is at the Triple Eh 'AAA' status in Canada-Ontario standards. Joined with the Inter County Major Baseball League in 2001, this team will not stop and be known as an expansion team, their goal is to take out the defending perennial champion Toronto Maple Leafs ans win the league championship Jack and Lynne Dominico Trophy. The Baycats site can be found at http://www.barriebaycats.com or http://www.oocities.org/i_c_m_b_l_on_ca/barriebaycats.html
