Carmania (Carma) comes from an Ashkenazim Jewish family, raised in a Yiddish shtele. Her first name is the 'family' name -- the primary Jewish name used only among others of the same shtele and ethnic background. Matriona is the Russian name commonly given to Jews for usage in the non-Jewish world. Amiram is her maiden name, and Moisse her married name.

She married Gerii Moisse as a young woman, passionately in love with the intelligent and logical Jewish soon-to-be businessman. She was hesitant to leave the shtele for Moscow, but followed despite this, the thoughts of becoming non-prejudiced in a larger, 'freer' city tantalizingly playing in her mind. Unfortunately, this wasn't the case, and the prejudices the couple encounter beat away at them and their relationship.

She had two children, both originally named Chai Nataniel Moisse and Hoshama Mikhail Moisse, but they were forced to drop their Jewish names at the ages of 3 and 1 by Gerii and adopt the Russian patronymic "Geriiovich".

The heart and spiritual center of the Moisse family, she works relentlessly towards equal rights for others of her religion and race. She's closest to Mikhail, her youngest son who shares who talent of art. A tragedy separates her from her son, but she's determined after she passes on to guide he and his family towards their own happiness.
