With half-German, half-Russian ancestory, Natasha has images of turning Provinicial Russia into the elegant French society of St. Petersburg and Moscow. She refuses to give her children Patryonymic names or traditional last names and drops her own in the process, following in her mother-in-law's steps. Her over-bearing wish for her children to succeed in her name comes off wrongly, instead scarring the three of them.
