The Institute of
Engineering and Technology, Kanpur is the brainchild of the former Vice - Chancellor of
Kanpur University, Shri S.S. Kathiyaar. He played a very vital role in the development of
IETK during his tenure. The foundation stone of IETK was laid down by the then defense
minister of India, Shri Mulayam Singh Yadav. The first batch begun its course in early
1997. LocationThe Institute of Engineering and Technology, Kanpur is situated on G.T. Road, towards Rawatpur - Kalyanpur side, about 12 kilometers from the Kanpur Central railway station. It is located in the plush green university campus with an expanse of about 260 acres. Regular local buses and three wheeler taxies ply from the station on this route. The institute is located in close proximity to other institutions like Indian Institute of Technology, National Sugar Institute, Indian Institute of Pulses Research etc. which have a high reputation in India. DepartmentsThe institute, at present, awards a 4-year B-Tech. degree in the four important disciplines of Mechanical, Electronics and Communication, Computer Science and Engineering , and Chemical Engineering. It has a total intake of 240 per year with 60 students on roll in each department. The degrees are awarded directly by the CSJM University. It is fully equipped with modern laboratories and sufficient apparatus in each lab. The students are encouraged to work with an open mind and are free to carry out their own experiments whenever they want. The institute does not believe in the theory of learning by cramming and tries to instill a sense of practicability to all topics. Residential FacilityThe institute provides full boarding and lodging for the girl students in a well-built hostel. It is located very close to the academic area and is about self contained. The boy students at present reside in rented flats or rooms in groups and the institute helps them in this as far as possible. Academic AreaThe courses being common for the students of first year, their lectures are taken in large groups of 120 or 240 students in the lecture halls. The institute has big lecture halls to accommodate a large no. of students. The auditorium has a capacity of more than 260 people. Another auditorium with a larger capacity is in the offing. There is a big Central Library which subscribes to important periodicals and caters to students of all fields viz. Engineering, Management, Pure Sciences etc. The academic area is complete with a full fledged Computer Center, Workshop, Electronic Labs and Chemical Engineering Workshops. It is remarkable that ours is the only institution of U.P. offering free e-mail and internet access to its students. There is an environment of serenity all around which helps in students' concentration. |
