Neon Genesis Evangelion |
I'm a huge fan of mecha anime, and this is by far the best anime there is out there, mecha or not. Why would I say this though when it doesn't have the artistic finesse of say something like "Akira" or "Ghost In the Shell"? Nor does it seem to have a huge fan base on american television such as the Toonami shows DBZ or Outlaw Star. Plus it lacks the nice plotline of anime such as Cowboy Bebop. Neon Genesis Evangelion (aka Evangelion or Eva), is following in the footsteps of extremely popular anime mecha series such as Patlabor, Macross, and MS Gundam. Eva's writer known as Anno wrote the series as a way to deal with his own depression, therefore despite all the gigantic fight scenes, his main focus was the lives of his characters, set against the background of the coming of the final judgement known as Third Impact. The plotline is derived from the Dead Sea Scrolls, and Anno's interpretation of the coming of judges, known as Angels. Despite the cuddly name, the Angels are actually immense beasts competing for the planet they had lost in the early days within the Garden of Eden. If this doesn't sound complex enough, the plethora of complex terms that are thrown at the viewer is enough to give one a seizure. Since the plot is so complex, I'm going to take the time to explain in detail the coming of Angels, terms used in the anime, and the conflict that many a man has had with the series ending and movie. |

THE FINAL WORDS: Well these aren't really my final words since I'll be adding more imfomation relating to the films, plot-line, angels and terms in the coming days. I'm such a big fan of this anime that I have viewed the whole series in Japanese and American. The entire series is a measly 26 episodes. There are however a gazillion sites of devoted Eva fans whom write their own Eva pieces prentending that the last few episodes never occured. I have attempted it myself, but it is hopeless to try and continue the series without drastic altercation of plot and characters. I must though state that this series should be rated "R" due to the violence, sexual innuendos, some nudity, and the complexity of the plot in which some kids won't understand and some parents can't explain without watching it themselves. Yeah its that deep. Plus it hits home on the causes of depression, which sadly enough was not followed by most of Anno's viewers. But I can however suggest that kids watch Nadesico. Its also an ADV film, and appears to be geared more towards a younger audience. Also if you pay close attention to the opening credits, you'll notice something...hopefully (wink, wink). |
