Come To the Island...YESSSS...The Island

In the insane world of amusement parks, park CEO's own the homes to some of the biggest and baddest rides we know today.  However a recent trip to Florida has told me a great deal about what I can expect from the heavy hitters in the amusement industry.

As another fresh year of fun at Islands of Adventure is underway, dedicated park patrons might notice a few changes to the landscape of the park.  Driving down I-4 heading South a mound of dirt sits alongside the road just in front of the park.  Rumor has it that this is where a new hotel is being added, but there is confirmation that the park is currently constructing island #6 to the park.  Wandering through the park there aren't any obvious signs of construction anywhere.  So just where is this new island going to go, and what is it going to be?

No official word has been announced yet, but with developing plans for the park's 6th coaster already underway, the most likely probability is Universal is creating an Outer Space Island of some sort.  Themed to the Universal Studio's blockbuster Apollo 13, this new coaster innovation will once again test the limits of just what can be expected of coasters in the future.
The new indoor "capsule coaster" is said to take the idea of a motion simulator ride, forcing the riders to look foreward in order to experience the sights.  Riding in small enclosed cars, a small viewport will be cut out forcing riders to look through this porthole in the capsule as they travel through outer space in an attempt to make it back to Earth.  It has been said that the theming is going to be similar to that of Disaster Transport at Cedar Point (before its massive downgrade), or close to Walt Disney World's Space Mountain.

What other adventures will be found at IOA in 2003 is anyone's guess.  It'ld seem fairly ridiculous to make a brand new island just for one ride.  But whatever happens at Islands of Adventure, it's a safe bet that their newest attraction will be as successful as the film.

See you at the island...Yesssssss, the island...
