Terminal Essay and more: The State of the Movies, 2002, as seen through "Scooby-Doo"

Lesson 1: that this movie was made at all
Lesson 2: that reviews, despite being negative, took the time to mention that Matthew Lillard and Freddie Prinze Jr. were playing the roles they were born for
Lesson 3: that it made over $100 million in approximately the first weekend
Lesson 4: that by the Monday after its release, a sequel had been greenlighted
Lesson 5: that it was out on DVD in less than four months
Lesson 6: that no one can remember anything about it

I think the entire life cycle of "Scooby-Doo" tells more about the movie industry than anything that will be nominated for an Oscar. It wasn't the first time that a movie about nothing was made, that everyone saw and then promptly forgot, but the speed at which this movie moved definitely broke new ground.
