Inglis House Poetry Workshop

About the Poetry Workshop

The Inglis House Poetry Workshop is a collaboration of writers who reside at Inglis House. The workshop meets weekly for the purpose of sharing and critiquing poetry and other original writing. The Inglis House Poets have published six chapbooks - Voices from the Heart (1998), Di-Verses (1999), I Guess It Won't Get Done (2000), What's the Inside Story?(2001), How It Is (2003), Quasimodo's Eyes (2005) and I Could Feel My Stomach Doing the Lambada (2006). In addition to the weekly meetings, the IH Poets do readings in the Philadelphia area and invite local poets to perform at Inglis House. Recent readers were Elaine Terranova, Darcy Cummings and Emma Rosenthal. The IH Poets have been featured in the Philadelphia Tribune. Last fall took part in the annual Collingswood Book Festival in Collingswood, New Jersy. In April 2006 they sponsored the first every regional Poetry and Disabilities Conference. IH Poets have been published in numerous small literary magazines and the Poetry Workshop is the subject of an online article in Fieldnotes.

One of the year's most recent endeavors has been the launching by some members of the poetry workshop of Wordgathering, a new online poetry journal, in March 2007, and the June issue will be available this month. While it shares many of the same goals as this site, Wordgathering is dedicated to the publication of work of non-IH Poetry Workshop members. We have now completed the first year of its publication. Writers interested in submitting can check the submission guidelines of the Wordgathering website. It is now actively seeking disability poetry.

More recently, members of the poetry workshop presented a performance of their poetry in conjunction with the Amaryllis Theater Company at The Playground at the Adrienne Theater in Philadelphia. This was part of the larger month-long disability and the arts festival "Independence Starts Here."

Although all workshop members share the common bond of being in wheel chairs, the writing produced represents a great diversity of interest and style. A representative selection of individual poets is presented here. This includes work by Steve Parker , Dana Hirsch , Stuart Sanderson, Gina Minter, Denise March, Laura Emerson , Mary Tisera , and Yvette Green.

Disabilities Poetry Contest - 2008

The 2008 Inglis House disability poetry contest will begin on April 1 and run until June 1. For details click on Contest Guidelines. Viewing previous winners is a good way to see the kinds of poems that have impressed the judges in the past. To view last year's winners, just click on 2007 Contest Winners. The contest winners and many other poets are included in this year's chapbook of disability poetry, Slow Dancing to Invisible Music . In addition to poetry, this year's chapbook includes essays on disability poetics. For more information about Slow Dancing to Invisible Music, please email the Poetry Workshop.
