Briefing Presented at the United Nations, New York, October 1, 1999

THE RIGHT TO SELF-DETERMINATION
and the
ROLE OF THE UNITED NATIONS

On October 1, 1999, an IHRAAM Briefing on the Right to Self-Determination and the Role of the United Nations was presented in Conference Room 7 of the United Nations Building, from 1:15 p.m. until 2:45 p.m.

Mr. Colin McNaughton acted as moderator for the presentation, and gave an introductory speech on the topic. The event was chaired by Dr. Ayuub Thaku.

Barrister Majid Tramboo gave a presentation detailing the right of peoples to defend themselves when violently attacked, particularly when the attack is perpetrated by their own goverenment.

Mr. Abdul Gani Lone, the most senior leader of the A.P.H.C. of the Kashmiri struggle gave an account of the present situation in Indian-occupied Kashmir, followed by a speech from Mr. Shabir Ghulam Qadir.

A video about recent Indian elections in Kashmir exposing the participation of the military in rounding up civilians and forcing them to the polls, clearly revealed the invalidity of the electoral process in Kashmir.
