David's story:

This first story explains how I first met my girlfriend. It was an interesting experience to say the least, so I hope you enjoy reading it as much as I enjoyed writing and living it!!!

March 21, 2004

The day began the same as any other. I awoke a half hour before my alarm clock was set for, so I could already tell that the day was going to be a long one. This was reinforced by the fact that I only slept for seven hours, which includes the mandatory tossing and turning for the first half hour before I finally doze off. I stayed up most of the night doing random things, trying to make myself feel better that I had nothing to keep me occupied on a Saturday night. After all, how great would I feel if I went to sleep early on a weekend? Anyway, I slid the bar on my alarm clock over to prevent the annoying sound from buzzing through the hallway of my apartment style dorm. Even though it was 10 AM it was a weekday, and I knew that the chances were good that none of my other roommates were even considering getting up yet.

I turned on my laptop and sat there waiting while it asked me for my password and slowly loaded all the programs that I have installed on it. It was a graduation present from my parents, during which time it was the top of the line notebook. Now, just short of two years later, it has been through several college papers, downloads, and even some minor viruses. Since it is outdated, it seems to take longer for the computer to actually start up, so I sat in my executive leather chair wondering why I couldn’t sleep any longer. I looked at the clock and noticed that it was now 10:20 . After doing my normal stretching to loosen my joints, I opened internet explorer to check my mail and see what my plans for the day consisted of.

First, I accessed my AOL account to see if Ann, my social problems professor, had emailed me details about a Saint Patrick’s Day parade that was scheduled to occur near her house. I was first invited at the Jane Addams conference, which I didn’t seriously consider until later. Looking back now, it’s a decision that I would gladly accept again without any hesitation.

Ann had emailed me the Friday before the parade to seriously consider attending the gala. Knowing that my social calendar would be empty, I decided that I had nothing to lose, so I sent her an email telling her that I would be happy to join her. There was only one problem though. I had only been to her house once, while it was dark and someone else was driving, so I had no clue where to go. Ann offered me a ride to her house, since she knew the way and the battery to my Blazer was dead the week before. Feeling guilty to make her travel out of her way, I hesitantly accepted, and we decided to piece the details together slowly over time.

So here I sat in my comfortable leather chair, still unsure who was going to pick me up, where they were going to be at, or what time. I’d sent an email at one in the morning on Saturday night/ Sunday morning, depending how you want to look at it, but was unsure they received it because their computer was having technical problems. I told her that I would most likely be ready by 12:30 , and gave her a location I knew would be easy to find. The email that I opened up this morning said that she was busy cooking, but would send her daughter to fetch me.

This seemed strange to me, especially because I’d already met her daughter once before. A couple weeks earlier, the only other time I visited Ann’s house, we tried to attend a meeting for a project for one of my classes. When we finally arrived at the destination, Joseph, one of my classmates who happens to prefer the company of men, and I both exited his car and began to walk around trying to find the correct building. We wandered around the street aimlessly, and noticed Ann walking along the opposite side. We called out to her and ran over, hoping she knew where the building was. Standing by her side was a girl with fairly long hair and freckles, which Ann introduced as her daughter, Claire.

I sat in my room confused at what I had just read. There was no way that Ann was going to send Claire out to get me. Even though I was unsure of her age, I guessed that she was within the range of 8 to 10. I just let the thought slide passed my mind, because I had other things to think about. I sent a quick email to Ann detailing specifically where I would be and at what time. I checked my email periodically until the time I was actually picked up, but no response was ever sent.

Knowing that I’d spent more than enough time on the computer, I looked at the clock and noticed that it was already 11. I began to hear sounds of movement coming from the hallway, so I opened my door and peeked out to see who was up. I stood in my doorway to pry my head around the corners of the hall, when I saw Adam wandering around dazed. We said our customary hellos and he shut his door, most likely trying to enjoy sleeping in. I wish that I had the same luxury, but I needed to take a shower so I could look presentable for the parade.

I began to collect my clothes in preparation for my shower, when I noticed light slipping through the small slits in my blinds. I decided to open them, and peered out to witness what at first looked like a beautiful day, if you block out the snow present on the ground. I hate when Mother Nature plays tricks on me. Upset that it still wasn’t summer, I grabbed my clothes and went to shower. I knew the feeling of warm water would wake me up, and I was looking forward to savoring every minute of it.

After I’d toweled off and dressed, I opened the door to let all of the steam out of the bathroom. I wadded up my dirty clothes and carried them back to my room. I put them in my collapsible hamper, and checked the clock to see how I was doing on time. It was close to noon , meaning that I had time to kill. The prospect of breakfast sounded like great, but I knew Ann was cooking so I didn’t want to spoil my appetite. I grabbed a sweater to wear, because the weather channel convinced me that the blowing wind was too cold for my liking. I plopped back down on my bed and turned on some music, awaiting the arrival of my ride. It almost gave me a feeling of importance, but I knew it was just a kind gesture.

I sat up from my bed ten minute before I had to be at the meeting place, and decided to write down Ann’s home phone number in case I needed it for any reason. I grabbed my coat, locked my door, and headed out to the parking lot to wait for my ride. When I arrived at the circle loop, I walked out and looked around to see if my ride was there. There was only one van in the lot, and it was on the curb, sitting at a stop sign. I thought this as a little strange, but I didn’t think it was my ride. I put Ann’s phone number in and hit the send button, when I noticed the van take a left and reenter the circle. It slowly crept to me, and the window rolled down to reveal a beautiful woman. At first glance I thought she was 25 or 26, but I thought nothing of it. She introduced herself as Katie Collins, Ann’s daughter, so I knew it was the right car. I hung up my phone and jumped in the car. In the backseat I saw Claire, so I told her hi and asked how she was. She supplied me with a quick answered, as I noticed that we had turned into the local Speedway . Katie said she had to get some ice for her mom, so Claire and I remained in the car. While she was away, I learned that Katie thought of me as irresponsible, which isn’t the best first impression. After a little bit of conversation, I learned that Katie was the same age as me, which was surprising because of her looks and actions.

After Katie tossed the ice in the back, we drove off to their house to meet up with the rest of the party goers. Since the parade was close to starting Katie decided to park somewhere other than her driveway. She grabbed both bags of ice, even though I offered to help, and began walking. This girl seemed to be very independent, and not to mention good looking. The entire time I was walking beside her I couldn’t help but wonder what she was thinking about. My mind wouldn’t stop thinking about how great she looked in the outfit that she was wearing. I followed a step behind so I could analyze her wonderful figure. We arrived at the corner and took a left, passing by all the people that had gathered to watch the parade. We walked a few paces down the street, as I noticed the house that I’d visited a month earlier. A small black fence surrounded the yard, which gave me the instant impression of “keep out”. I knew that I had been invited, so I ignored my initial feeling and continued after Katie. As usual, Claire was already in the house by the time we were half way up the driveway.

We arrived at the front door of her house, and with me being the gentleman that I am I opened the door for Katie. She thanked me with a smile on her face in a sweet little tone. The sound of her voice threw me back for a minute, as I’d never heard anything so pretty. Don’t get me wrong, the girl doesn’t have a voice made for singing, but her normal voice is sweet, soothing, and even seductive. Anyway, I walked into her house and realized that I forgot how beautiful the inside of their house is.

I walked into the kitchen and saw Ann busy preparing the snacks for this festive occasion. I said hi to Ann, and noticed the several other people present in the house. Other than Claire, Ann, and Katie I didn’t know anyone, so Ann left her post cooking food to introduce me to everyone. The first person on the list was Jim, Ann’s husband. I’d heard very little about him from Ann in class, so I wasn’t given the best impression before our actual encounter. To me he seemed to be easy going and nice, but it could always be a deception. Next, Ann introduced me to some of other people she’d introduced from around the neighborhood. I heard several noises outside of the house, so I walked out the front door and looked around to see what was happening. Several police cars, fire trucks, and floats had begun driving past the house, so I decided to make my way out to the road. Katie looked around the house for me, and noticed that I had taken my leave. She glanced out the window and saw me standing on the side of the road, my full attention on the parade. She decided to accompany me, seeing as how I was the only one out there at the time.

As Katie made her way out to me, I stood there marveling at the size of the parade. Being from a smaller town I’d grown accustom to seeing a few police cars, fire trucks, and one or two floats on a good year. This event was far more extravagant than anything I’d seen. I stood there awestruck as I heard a noise behind me. I turned toward the source of the noise, and realized it was Katie setting a chair down. She offered to have me sit, but I declined since I felt comfortable standing. I tried to refocus my attention completely on the parade, but I would occasionally sneak a look down at Katie to admire her beauty. I couldn’t get over how cute she looked in her coat with her arms crossed in front of her in an attempt to keep warm. A little smile crossed my face when I began to think about how great it would be to have my arms wrapped around her to keep her warm. It was just a daydream, but a great one at that.

A little while after Katie had initially offered me a seat, I decided that it was a good idea if I rested my legs. It would give me the opportunity to not only keep myself warm, but also make a conversation with Katie easier. Shortly after I sat down the clouds covered the sun. Katie decided that she no longer needed her sunglasses, so she put them on her head. As she did that I looked over to ask her a question, and saw her unveiling her pretty eyes. I became short of breath, and had to take a minute before I finally recalled my question. Katie asked if I was cold, which I thought about for a second and decided that I should warm up. She offered me a cup of coffee, but I don’t enjoy the taste of coffee. I’d much rather have a tea, but there wasn’t any in the house. I asked if she had any hot chocolate, but Katie was unsure if there was any left. We both stood up from our chairs and made our way inside to search for my drink. Not knowing my way around the house, I left the searching up to Katie. She shuffled through several drawers before pulling out a container of French vanilla cocoa. Before she finished pouring it one of the partygoers offered me an alcoholic beverage, but I decline since the mere thought of beer makes my stomach queasy.

Katie grabbed a spoon and scooped half of the French Vanilla sugar into my cup. She filled the rest with milk and put it into the microwave to warm it up. I felt bad that I couldn’t assist her, but I felt a little better since I was the guest at her house. She handed me the cup and I waited for her at the front door of her house. I figured she would come out once she was finished with her drink, so I made my way back to my curbside seat. I randomly sipped my hot chocolate to keep me warm, and was surprised that the parade was still going on an hour later. Katie finally joined me an hour later, making me wonder how important my visit was to her. I realize that there were other people there that she may have to entertain, but I still felt as though I’d been forgotten.

The current mindset I was in made me think that I had little chance of developing a half-way decent friendship with Katie, which gave me even less of a chance of being more than just friends. I wasn’t exactly sure if this was what I wanted, but I wanted to keep the option open. Besides, there needs to be two people involved in a relationship, so why should I be the only one interested in a relationship? I put all these thoughts to the back of my mind and decided to just enjoy the parade and her company.

Katie sat down next to me in her fold up chair with a drink in her hand. She took so long to join me that my hot chocolate was completely consumed. She offered to get me another, but I declined fearing that she would disappear for another hour in the depths of her house. We sat in the cold, sunny weather watching what little was left of the parade. It ended only a few minutes after Katie sat down, so we began to collect the chairs that were brought to the road. Once again Katie grabbed more chairs than I did, but I was behind her enjoying the view. I still couldn’t get over how beautiful she was, but I didn’t say anything since it was our first encounter.

We set the chairs up against the side of the house and joined everyone else in the kitchen. Ann offered me a bowl of homemade soup, but I was reluctant to accept given the ingredients. It contained many vegetables that I’m not too fond of, but I knew that it wouldn’t kill me. I hesitantly agreed, and began to eat in small portions. The liquid vegetable soup wasn’t nearly as bad as I had initially anticipated, in fact, it tasted great. Ann offered me a slice of specialty bread, and I began to scoop the soup with the bread. Katie began to munch on the assorted snacks that were placed on the table as we sat there and continued talking to one of her friends. Katie left for the bathroom and her friend left to find her kid. This just left me and Claire in the kitchen, at which time she told me that Katie thought I was cute and was flirting with me. I had no idea that she was flirting with me, and sat there unsure what I should think. Katie returned shortly later, and I tried to watch what I said. I would have preferred to not know that I was flirting, but my ignorance was gone thanks to a nine year old. The time was nearly six, and Ann decided it was close to dinner time. I felt like I had overstayed my welcome, so I said goodbye to the few people that remained at the house and headed out to where the van was parked. As Ann and I walked to the van I couldn’t help but wonder if that was the one and only time I would see Katie. A girl like that must be extremely busy with friends and other social activities, and would never be interested in a guy like me. That’s what I thought seconds before I was at the van, and decided not to say anything to Ann about it. After all, she was my professor and admitting that I may have a thing for her daughter seemed strange, not to mention premature. I’d only met the girl that day, so it was still too early to say anything. When we arrived back at college I thanked Ann for a wonderful time and went up to my room to do some serious thinking.

I sat on the couch in the living room and couldn’t get Katie off of my mind. I kept thinking about what Claire had said to me, but I had no way of justifying it. Plus, I never even found out if Katie was available or already taken. I paced around the room wondering what I should do next, but nothing came to mind. The only way I could possibly contact her would be to call Ann’s house, but I wasn’t sure if she would even remember me.

Katie, you’re an angel, a blessing in disguise

You light up my life, so it’s no surprise

That we’re as close as we are to one another

We’re best friends, but also lovers

You help to keep me calm when I’m extremely upset

By simply doing what you do best

Relaxing me and ensuring all will be fine

When I’m with you we almost completely stop time

But I understand that nobody is perfect

However, without you I feel simply worthless
