NOTE* Rockbridge kindergarten (my former school) has a citizenship packet that all students must complete the first week  of school.  The packet is based on Clifford, The Big Red Dog.  However, I loved the idea of using Blue and her clues to tour the school.

This plan is VERY specific to my situation, but many Kindergarten teachers have used this idea to tour their schools.  Because of this, I am keeping this link active, even though I have changed schools.

Blue has a friend that is going to help us learn how to be a good Rockbridge citizen.  She wants us to play Blue's Clues to find out who her friend is. (I have a Blue that plays Blue's "bark" when I squeeze her hand...so she can "talk" to me and "tell" me she wants us to play Blue's Clues.)

First Stop~Restroom
We find a picture of Slippery Soap and a note about "Restroom Rules."  We use the restroom, practicing these "rules" and then when we line up in the hall the rest of  Slippery's note is read.

"Thanks for leaving the restroom clean.
You kindergartners are really keen.
When you find a clue from Blue,
write it down is what you do.
The music room is where you need to look
to find the Handy Dandy Notebook."

Go to Music room and meet Mrs. Porter.
Get the notebook with a clue attached.
"Draw a picture of a fish.
Paint a pretty heart.
You'll learn to make many wonderful things
with Mrs.Thomson in Art."

Go to Art room.  Meet Mrs.Thomson.  Spot a picture of a dog with a blue paw print on it.  A clue! A clue!  Draw dog in the notebook.  And line up in hallway.  On the door to the next building we find a note from Paprika.  It says:
"Where do you go when you are hurt
or feeling kind of sick?
Go to visit Mrs. B
in our Rockbridge Clinic."

Go to Clinic.  Meet Mrs. B.  A clue! A clue!  In the clinic there is a red crayon with a blue paw print on it.  Color red in the notebook.  Mrs. B tells us that she heard that we have a letter in the office.

Go to office.
Meet the staff and administrators.  Explain that they keep our school working like it should.  Ask Mrs. Fluery about the letter.  She'll present Mailbox...you could sing the "We just got a letter" song if you want :o)...Open the letter and read it aloud:

"Your stomach starts to grumble
Boy your ready to munch
Go to the cafeteria
to see where you will eat lunch."

Go through the line and explain the procedure for selecting lunch items (we're self serve) and paying.  Proceed to our assigned table.  Sit down and review lunch room "procedure and rules."
Mr. Salt and Mrs. Pepper figurines are on the table with a note.
Read (in ze French accent, of course!)
"We are very proud of you for learning each new rule.
You'll be very happy when you follow them at school.
Now it's time for you to go and look for the third clue.
The ladies in the Media Center might have a clue for you."

Go to Media Center. (We don't go to the Media Center until an orientation has been scheduled so we can't go in) Sign with Tickity Tock is outside the door.  Explain that we will have a special day to learn all about the Media Center and how to use it.  Read the Tickey's clue.
"Hopping, jumping rope, bouncing a ball
Mr Grant will help you be good at it all
If you go to see the Gym
You just might catch a glimpse of him."

Go to Gym.  Meet Mr. Grant.
Head down sidewalk toward playground.
Picture of Shovel and Pail are on post.
Read their note.
"We hope that you are having a great first day.
You've reached the playground where you'll get to play.
When you hear the whistle blow
Line up quick!  It's time to go."
Tour playground first.  Discuss playground safety rules. Let them play!
Blow whistle to line up.

Go back to the classroom.  Clifford's First Day of school has been placed in the rocking chair.  It has a blue paw print on it.  A clue! A clue!  Draw a picture of a book in the Handy Dandy Notebook.  Read the book.

After the book, pull out the note book and review the clues.  dog, red, book.
Who is going to help us learn to be a good Rockbridge citizen?  Clifford!
