Ta'u Island
Hello, Here are the pictures. I am doing doctorate research there with my girlfriend. We both attend USC and are in Occupational Therapy Doctorate program. Her name is Alohanani and her great great grandmother, great grandmother are buried there. Grandmother's name is Amasone and the dad's name is Mapu Saei he holds the Paipaitele title and the home next to the church across from Matasaua elementary school. Mapu Saei is a retired Lt. Colonel and founder of American Samoa's Army Reserve. The pictures of the boys was funny that evening since the pastor was gone they were forming a group of about 12 boys and girls and playing the tin cracker cans and bottles in the pouring rain since they wouldn't get into trouble and to scare away the evil spirits. Our project is a lifestyle redesign program entitle Motu Sa. We are trying to bridge the cultural gap between balancing the Fa'a Samoa and Western style which is most stressful to the children. Topics include stress management, health and wellness, disease prevention, health promotion, nutrition etc. Kealii |

I was just surfing the net and I noticed the picture of my brother's resting place. I was really surprised to see it on the net. I was wondering if you have anymore pictures. I think that it is great that people want to learn about the fa'asamoa (samoan ways of living). The western ways of life sure has impacted the lives of the young generation in the Manua Islands. As you can see from your visit, the islands are mostly populated with the elderly folks and the school age children. Most of the young generation after they graduate from high school, dream of going off island so, they either earn a scholarship to pursue their college degree or they join the military. I have noticed that with stateside samoan kids, their parents often send them to Samoa to get disciplined if they can't control their behavior in the states. A lot of them feel that if they live the life of a samoan, living off the land, no malls, no fast life, it will make them appreciate what they have in the states. Good luck on your research.
