SUBWAY

There are excllent subway train system in Seoul and Incheon. It's the most efficient, convenient and cheap way to get Incheon and Wolmido from Seoul. Station names, ticket windows and transfer signs are all clearly market in English. Destination announcements are made in both English and Korean.

There is one problem only with 1-st line (this line leads to Incheon and Wolmido from Seoul). 1-st line splits in "Yongsan Station" and "Guro Station" (see the Subway scheme). For example, in "Yongsan Station" you can get 1-st line train to Incheon, 1-st line train to Suwon and train without the line number to Ichon (it's very easily to miss, isn't?). Worst of all these trains depart from the same platform and unlike station names and transfer signs the directions on the wagons are mostly in Korean. If you miss your train, just get back and try again - maybe next time you will be lucky.

Tickets window

Cost of the tickets is from 900 up to 2400 won, depending on distance. You can see the price for travel on subway plans above ticket windows or ticketing machines. After you have bought ticket you should come to turnstile with green arrow and insert your ticket into slot. The ticket pop-up on other side of turnstile. Don't forget to take your ticket. On destination station do as stated above, but now turnstile doesn't return your ticket.

TopHOW TO USE TICKETING MACHINE

I advise you to master ticketing machines, as the line to them is always less than to ticket windows. And I think that ticketing machines replace ticket windows soon (like in Busan).

How to use
  1. Find your destination and ticket price on the subway scheme (the price is indicated from current station)
  2. Press the fare button corresponding the price.
  3. For more than one ticket, select number of tickets (No needed to select for one ticket. If you miss press "Cancel" button).
  4. Insert the required coins (or bills) into the slot.
  5. Pick up your ticket and change.
TopTAXI

Taxi is convenient way of moving on Incheon. There are taxi stands in most busy city areas, and taxis can also be hailed on the streets. An available taxi is indicated by its lighted cap or red sign on its right side. If you don't want to investigate routes of Incheon buses or don't have time to walk to destinaton point, take a taxi. Remember, taxi-drivers don't speak English, therefore take a map of the area with you. Just show to driver the place of destinaton on the map and don't try to explain anything by words - it's useless.

Incheon taxi

The fare system of regular taxi is based on both distance and time. Fares are 1900 won for the first 2 kilometers and 100 won for each additional 144 meters. If the taxi is going less than 15 kilometers per hour, an additional charge of 100 won per 35 seconds is added to the fare. For example the fare between Incheon International Airport and downtown Seoul is usually around 50,000 won (including toll) though it could be higher if traffic is congested. Fares increase 20 percent between midnight and 4 a.m.

Above I described taxi fare system with counter. But in Incheon International Airport I met another unofficial system with fixed price. I wanted to go from the airport to ferry wharf for Wolmido (the distance is 15 km and fare by counter should be 15,000 won maximum). Instead they asked 40,000 won for the trip. I demanded from them to use counter, but they refused me and advised to take a bus. I tried to reduce price but it was useless.

By the way, all the time I didn't speak to taxi drivers. I spoke to some mediator. Probably he was local criminal or taxi drivers themselves hired him because of good English. I was compelled to agree because the fastest bus (No.306) go to Incheon for 2,5 hours (it was too long for me in that time) and last ferry to Wolmido departed soon.

But I had to give taxi-driver his due. He worked off my money in the best way. Do you remember "Taxi" movie and that part, where some man was late for his airplane and how he was rushed there. Now I believe, this was truth. My driver had taken from his car all. He slowed down to 80 kph in two places only, I think, where speed-traps were installed. I had eleven minutes only till last ferry left the wharf. But I was in time and had 2-3 minutes on hand.

TopBUSES

Incheon has only two subway lines, therefore there is a net of bus routes, which connects all points of the city. Of course, for a short distance it's more preferably to get a taxi, but if you want to go to Wolmido or Yeonan Pier from Dong-Incheon Station or from Incheon Station - you can use the buses.

Buses and bus-stop sign

The fare is about 900-1000 won. Enter the bus through the first door. Ther is a cash-box for fare near the driver. Put into the box your many for fare and pass farther - there are not tickets in public buses.

TopFERRIES

There are three types of ferries in Incheon. The first is domestic ferries which connect mainland and numerous islands near Incheon. The second is international ferries to Weihai, Tianjin, Qingdae, Dandong, Shanghai and Yantai of China. And third type is sightseeing boats. The ferries depart from Yeonan Pier (International Passenger Terminal No.1, Incheon Harbor Yeonan Passenger Terminal), Incheon Port (International Passenger Terminal No.2) and Wolmido (Wolmi wharf).

Domestic ferry to Yeongjongdo island

The most useful is ferry to and from Yeongjongdo island. Incheon International Airport is located on the island. There is schedule of "Wolmido wharf - Yeongjongdo wharf" ferry departure.
