March 22, 2003 Suddenly There Came A Rapping I have a sticker on my front door that clearly indicates I do not wish to be visited by door-to-door salesmen or saleswomen wishing to sell me the Christian religion. I live in an area where, I know from past experiences, I will be visited more often than I’d like by someone who would like to give me the good news of my impending eternal damnation if I do not surrender myself to their god and their interpretation of that particular god. It’s something I figured I’d just have to live with; that is, until I found a sticker on EvolveFish.com. While browsing the products found at EvolveFish.com, I came across a sticker that suited my needs perfectly. As you can see above, it clearly depicts a man and woman proselytizing the Christian religion with encircled in a not allowed or banned symbol. The price was right, so I placed my order and waited eagerly for my sticker and other products to arrive in the mail. I placed the sticker on my door right away, positive that it would be met with respect and my wishes would be acknowledged by the Christian salespeople avoiding my home. Thus far, I’ve witnessed three instances when proselytizers came to my door after having visited others in my community. Thus far, two ignored my sticker and knocked while one opened my screen door and then politely left after seeing my sticker. The first time this occurred, I was pretty steamed and was hoping they would return to my door (I was in bed and didn’t get to the door in time) so I could share my opinion of their beliefs with them, rather than declining their offer to be witnessed to, something I normally practiced in the past. Unfortunately, the couple never returned and the second couple of individuals that visited my home managed to pound my door without me answering it as well. This brazen display of disrespect offends me in the highest possible way. This is the hypocrisy that so irritates me about so many Christians in the United States. While it is OK for them, in their minds, to ignore my request that they leave me alone and not come to my home to sell me their preposterous religion; I can assure you, had I visited their home with material supporting atheism and explaining why what they believe is absurd, I would be met with fury and most likely excessive rudeness. I don’t even know what I think of people like that, it really irritates the hell out of me. |
