| 10/07/02 - West Virginia I moved from Florida to West Virginia in August of this year. I'd lived in WV before, in fact I was born here, and I'd almost forgotten how overtly religious many of the citizens of this state are, at least in the area that I've spent most of my life. I had an evolve fish emblem on the back of my van depicting a legged fish with the word "evolve" written in the middle of it on the back of the Christian fish, as if to have sex with it from behind. I arrived in WV around 5:00-6:00 AM and later that night someone picked the emblem from my van. It's sad when someone is so afraid of opposition that they try to remove it, even if it means performing an illegal act. It's pathetic. Anyway, it's annoying that in the minds of most of the people I'm around (family) everything that occurs is either the result of God or Lucifer. All good things are a reward from God; all bad things are a test, punishment, or the Devil having his evil little way on you. Those bad things that are a test or punishment, of course, only seem bad . . . as in the end they have a greater positive result: a lesson learned. To these people, nothing ever happens as a result of a chain of events or random chance. Their accomplishments aren't really the result of hard work and dedication; they're the result of their god blessing them. It's interesting that we have to actually bust our balls to get a college education or to start a business and work our way from rags to riches. How often have you heard of someone being blessed with a college degree and all the knowledge that is acquired while the degree is being earned over night? If I woke up tomorrow with four years worth of study suddenly implanted into my brain and a degree from Harvard, then I'll say I've been blessed. Until then, I'm taking the credit for my hard work. |
