On a mission to Argratha in the Gamma Quadrant, O'Brien has been convicted of espionage. As punishment, the Argrathi give him false memories of twenty years in prison. When he returns to DS9, O'Brien has trouble readjusting to life on the station, refusing counseling, snapping at his friends and even his daughter. And he has recurring visions of his "cellmate", Ee'char - whom he won't tell anybody about.
