Star Trek: Deep Space Nine

The Emperor's New Cloak

Season 7 Episode 12

Plot Summary: Well Ezri gets to be one of the main characters in this episode! There's a new idea! Of course this is not the Ezri we know, this is the Nega-Ezri from that great and fascinating place known as the Mirror Universe! And she's crossed over to give Quark a message: The Nagus has stumbled into the Mirror Universe looking for (What else?) Profit. But the Klingon-Cardassian-Bajoran Alliance has captured him. They will only release him for a cloaking device. The Nagus recommenced that Quark get it. So Quark and Rom purloin one out of Martok's Bird of Prey. Once the trio (Quark, Rom, and Nega-Ezri) are in the other universe they have to escape from Rebel-controlled Terok Nor with the help of Nega-Ezri's partner Nega-Brunt. The foursome escape in their Nega-ship. Once in the Alliance's territory they board the Mother of all Nega-ships, The Alliance Flagship. Once the cloaking device is in the Reagent's (Nega-Worf's) hands, Quark and Rom are thrown into prison, and Intendant Kira is set free since she thought the whole cloaking device plan up: And it worked. In prison Quark, and Rom are reunited with the Nagus and that big guy who's always following him around. Eventually Nega-Garak realizes he can't install the cloaking device, and enlists Rom to help him. Rom does so, but unbeknownst to those watching him he sabotages the ship. Then Nega-Garak tries to kill all the Ferengi with his Nega-gun, but Nega-Ezri saves them since Nega-Kira killed Nega-Brunt with her Nega-gun. Meanwhile Smiley (Nega-O'Brien) and Nega-Bashir pilot the defiant and attack the Flagship. which had ambushed them. Luckily for them, Rom's sabotage kicks in and everything on the ship shuts down. The Reagent surrenders and Quark, Rom, The Nagus, Big Guy, Nega-Ezri, and Nega-Kira all escape. That's pretty much it except for some party scenes on the station.

Sub-Plot: Zip.

My Opinion: Well, this episode was a tough one to rate. I enjoyed it enough as I watched it. It was entertaining, and funny at times. But afterward the full impact of what this episode did hit me. This was the last mirror universe episode (or so we've been told). For 4 seasons we've been watching these alternate characters fight their war, we've seen the little human rebellion do great feats. They've captured Terok Nor, defended it from a big Alliance fleet, and now, they've captured the Alliance's leader and flagship? With what, 50 men on the defiant? Sure they had the Reagent pinned down, but how in hell did they hope on boarding the ship and getting 1,000 Klingons or more to surrender? The worst part of this is, they did. The Reagent really doesn't seem like a guy who would just fall down so easily after so many years of battle, and even if he fell, does it really make sense that all his crewmen would agree to the decision? Of course, if he and his crew hadn't just given up, then Quark might not have made it out alive. But is anything ever realistic in a Quark episode? No. But to tie in something so long-lasting to the DS9 serious, and then end it on this note is ludicrous. I just pray they don't wrap up our war so cheap and shoddily! Again, the rest of the episode was nothing wonderful, but it was at least worthy of a "pretty good" I think I'll have to put this episode right smack in the middle scale to represent it having a lot of good and bad that equaled out into an average episode. And after all this, Intendant Kira survives. Does that lady ever die? Wonder if she'll come and visit our side any time soon. Doubtful, but an interesting and likely possibility given her character and the fact that she has nothing left in her universe.

Wrap-Up: Well, I've pretty much given away what rating this is going to get, but here we go: "The Emperor's New Cloak" was equally good and bad therefore it gets smacked into the middle of the rating scale. I give it two stars. If this is an example of how they wrap up long-standing plot threads, were all in for a big disappointment.
