Star Trek: Deep Space Nine

A Time To Stand

Season 6 Episode 1

Plot Summary: Sisko and Co. take an undercover Jem'Hadar ship into Cardassian space in order to destroy a Dominion factory that produces ketracel white. They succeed, but their ship's warpdrive is shot and they're stuck in Cardassian space.

Sub-Plot: Odo convinces Weyoun to let him reestablish his Bajoran deputies, while Dukat makes a pass at Kira.

My Opinion: DS9 has had a long line of great season premieres, including the two-hour "Way of the Warrior" and last year's "Apocalypse Rising." This was a good episode, with many entertaining moments, but as season premieres go it wasn't too impressive. The enjoyableness of "A Time to Stand" came from specific moments in which the characters, and the actors who play them, shined. Some of my favorites were: the conversation between Sisko and his father, Dukat's pass at Kira, and Dax, Bashir, O'Brien, and Nog complaining about how inhospitable the Jem'Hadar ship was. However the uninspired plot was what didn't sell me the episode. It was too simple. I know it was just the beginning of a much larger story, but I usually expect more from a season premiere.

Wrap-Up: "A Time to Stand" did a good job setting the stage for the six-part Dominion Occupation. It had some great character moments, but the poor plot doesn't do too well on it's own. I give it two and a half stars (out of four).
