Season 6 Episode 19
Plot Summary: Sisko makes an entry into his personal log. He talks about how he planned to convince the Romulans to join the war against the Dominion. He first consulted Garak, and asked him if he could break into the Cardassian archives and search for any information that might hint at the Dominion's duplicity towards the Romulans. Garak had his contacts do what they could, but all were killed in the process. Then Garak came up with an idea: If they can't find proof, why not make they're own. Sisko agreed that the stakes were high enough to take this action. He, Garak, and Tolar, a criminal who was an expert at making holosuite programs, conjure up a Cardassian data rod and installed on it an image of the Dominion leaders plotting to attack Romulous. When the Romulan Ambassador saw it he was convinced it was a fake and angrily left DS9.Shortly after, Sisko heard of how the Ambassador's shuttle exploded on its way home and how the Romulans found evidence of a Cardassian bomb. With the ambassador's death and the data rod with Talor's program, the Romulans joined the war. In a rage of fury Sisko confronted Garak with the allegation that he planted the bomb and had planned to from the start. Garak admitted to this, and told Sisko that what he did was necessary to achieve they're goal. Sisko realized that the price paid was worth the importance of the goal. With the Romulans at their side, the Federation and the Klingon Empire now stood a chance against the Dominion. Sisko says to his log how he must live with the knowledge of what he did and how he knows he can live with it. He then erases the entire log.
Sub-Plot: None
My Opinion: Wow! This was excellent, extremely powerful and entirely captivating. It was very interesting, entertaining, and even humorous at times (Thanks to Garak). It was filled with many good plot twists and great moments. I would go as far to say it was nearly perfect, The best Sisko episode in a long time, and one of the best Garak episodes ever. This was a good example of how a fun entertaining episode can still be deep and thought provoking.
Wrap-Up: "In the Pale Moonlight" was an excellent episode, thoroughly entertaining and powerful at the same time. The characters of Sisko and Garak have never worked so well together. I give it four stars!
