Rose Petals

Ryou opened his eyes slowly and felt Bakura’s breath gently rustling his hair.  He became acutely aware of Bakura’s snoring.  Ryou lifted his head and rested his chin on Bakura’s chest looking at him with a smile.  Beside the bed, the candles were completely melted and sill released their spicy odor.  Ryou moaned as he hugged Bakura again.  The sleeping yami opened his eyes to see Ryou where he fell asleep.  Bakura rubbed  his eyes.

“Past morning already.  It’s almost afternoon.”

“We had a long night last night,” Ryou kissed him gently on the lips.

“I don’t know about you, but I’m hungry,” Bakura said flipping Ryou over and pinning him to the mattress causing him to giggle.

“Yami! Not now!  Give me time to rest!  Come on!” Ryou pushed him off and slipped into his bathrobe.  He grabbed his clothes and Bakura dashed into the bathroom first.  Ryou turned on the shower.  “Yami!!  I was going first!”

“Too bad! I’m first!”

Ryou stopped in the hall and glanced at the picture on the wall.  His parents were holding him as a baby.  They looked very proud as they held their son.  Ryou lightly brushed his fingers over the glass.

Bakura was a great companion.  His dad was always out on digs and his mother was dead.  His yami was his only contact with another person with the exception of his friends.    He was someone to love, someone to talk to, but he wished he had a family.  His father would come home for his birthday and Christmas, but would leave shortly after a few days.  Sometimes he would surprise him for no reason, but this was seldom.  His fathers always came home with a present for him.  He would never forget when he was given the Millenium Ring that changed his life for the better.  It was for his birthday.  Bakura was not the companion-lover he had now become, but the cruel, vicious tyrant he was.

Ryou changed the sheets on his bed, replaced the apple-cinnamon candles with vanilla and picked up the rose petals off the ground.  Ryou stopped.

****Flashback*****

Ryou sat in his father’s arms looking at the ground.  A large crowd, all in black, crowded around the hole.  His father had tears running down  his face.  “I’m sorry” was all everybody said to him.  Ryou gripped tightly onto the women who took him in their arms, burying his head in their shoulders.  “At least little Ryou wasn’t hurt,” the men said patting his father on the shoulder. “I hope they find the guys who did it” gave his father little comfort.  His wife was gone.  As father and son gazed at each other, both of them realized that their worlds were to revolve around the other.  A large box was lowered into the ground.  Ryou’s father gave him the roles petals.  “Toss them in, son.”  Ryou released them watching them fall gently one by one onto the casket below.

Ryou shook his head from the memory.  He was only a baby.  How and why would he remember it now?  Bakura entered the room watching Ryou clutching the petals tightly on his knees.

“Ryou? You o.k.?”

Ryou sniffed. “They never caught him, yami.  They never caught her killer.”

Bakura looked confused. “What sparked this?”

Ryou opened his hand to reveal the rose petals.  “The memory just came to me.  I just looked at our family portrait in the hallway.  I don’t know why, but I remembered my mother’s funeral.”

Bakura sat on the bed.  “If you need to talk, Ryou, please talk to me.”  Bakura lifted Ryou’s chin to face him.  “You don’t regret anything, do you?” Ryou looked at his yami’s eyes.  His yami and him had been though tough times, but they always pulled through together.  They survived each other, for one. Bakura survived Anzu's brainwashing.

"Of course not, yami.  I'm very happy with the way things are."

Bakura brought Ryou to sit beside him.  "You're lucky to have a father, Ryou.  Mine never loved me.  He always kicked me out of the house when I was young so the rest of the family could eat.  My dad hated me.  I can tell just by the pictures around here he loves you very much.  Cheer up.  What's past is past."

Ryou shrugged.  "I guess you're right.  All we have is each other.  I love him, too.  He's just always so busy."

"I love you and I will always be there for you no matter what."  Bakura put his arm around him.

"Thank you, Bakura."  Ryou hugged him and skipped off for his shower.

Bakura finished picking up the petals and passed the picture.  They looked like a very happy family.  Bakura's family became the fiends that plagued the night-robbers, and murderers.  Not a smiling face among them, unless they were doing what they enjoyed-robbing or killing someone.  Bakura made lunch for himself since they woke up so late.  He read the morning paper.  A carnival was opening that night!  It was at the playground down the corner!  That should cheer Ryou up!  There would be games, food, and Ryou loved to ride the ferriss wheels and bumper cars.  He licked his lips at the thought of pizza, popcorn, and apples dipped in caramel.  "Mmm….Pizza," he thought.  Already salivating, Bakura checked the money his father sent Ryou.  The envelope was thinner than usual which was strange, but there was enough money for some fun.  He hated the ferriss wheel, though.  He did not like heights.  But, for a night with Ryou, it would be well worth it.

Ryou came down cleaned and dressed. He was heading to his sandwich, when he looked at Bakura.  "Yami Bakura, are you going to wear that shirt again?"

"It's my favorite shirt."

"It's also fading and old.  It's torn on the shoulder.  You need new clothes."

Bakura whined.  "I hate clothes shopping! It's boring!"

Ryou smiled and returned to his plate.  "I'll buy you ice cream."

"Deal.  In speaking of ice cream, tonight the carnival down the block is opening.  Want ta' go?"

Ryou's eyes lit up. "Sounds good. Do we have the cash available after we go shopping?"

"We can't order out dinner for the rest of the week, but we can do it!  I already checked."

Ryou finished lunch quickly and ran upstairs for some reserved money he had in case of emergencies.  Bakura grabbed the house keys and they left the house.  Bakura locked the door and locked it unaware of evil incarnate lurking in the bushes ready to pounce on Bakura.

They turned around and the yami took Ryou's hand. Bakura tripped over something on the steps.  The evil incarnate jumped from the bushes yelling, "YEAH FRIENDSHIP!!!!," startling Ryou.

If any of you guys have read my earlier fics, you know who is jumping out of the bushes!!!!!!
