Under God's Wings
An article in National Geographic several years ago provided a
penetrating picture of God's wings. After a forest fire in Yellowstone
National Park, forest rangers began their trek up a mountain to assess
the inferno's damage.
One ranger found a bird literally petrified in ashes, perched
statuesquely on the ground at the base of a tree. Somewhat sickened by
the eerie sight, he knocked over the bird with a stick. When he struck
it, three tiny chicks scurried from under their dead mother's wings.
The loving mother, keenly aware of impending disaster, had carried her
offspring to the base of the tree and had gathered them under her
wings,
instinctively knowing that the toxic smoke would rise. She could have
flown to safety but had refused to abandon her babies. When the blaze
had arrived and the heat had singed her small body, the mother had
remained steadfast. Because she had been willing to die, those under
the
cover of her wings would live.
What a reminder of what Jesus did for us! Learn to experience the
warmth and protection of life beneath the wings of the Almighty. "He
shall cover thee with his feathers, and under his wings shalt thou
trust."
Psalms 91:4
Winds of the Storm
Did you know that an eagle knows when a storm is approaching long before it
breaks? The eagle will fly to some high spot and wait for the winds to
come. When the storm hits, it sets its wings so that the wind will pick it
up and lift it above the storm. While the storm rages below, the eagle is
soaring above it. The eagle does not escape the storm. It simply uses the
storm to lift it higher. It rises on the winds that bring the storm. When
the storms of life come upon us - and all of us will experience them - we
can rise above them by setting our minds and our belief toward God. The
storms do not have to overcome us. We can allow God's power to lift us above
them. God enables us to ride the winds of the storm that bring sickness,
tragedy, failure and disappointment in our lives. We can soar above the
storm. Remember, it is not the burdens of life that weigh us down, it is
how we handle them.
The Bible says, "Those who hope in the Lord will renew their strength. They
will soar on wings like eagles." Isaiah 40:31
