SARAH ORDELIA DARLING FAMILY HOME PAGE

We don't have too much information about the Darling's yet. This is the little bit that we do know. We would like to thank the other DARLING descendants who are also helping with the genealogy and the information they have provided.

In the year 1790 was the first ever census taking in the United States. The first Darling we have found information about at the Bradford County Historical Society is Nathan Darling in the Chester County 1790 Census. Nathan was married to Ann from Germantown in Philadelphia County. There was two males over 16, six males 16 and under, two females 16 and over, and four females 16 and under. We do not know if he is an ancestor to our Darlings or not.

In the Connecticut Census, page 63, we have found ABEL DARLING in Litchfield County, in the town of Litchfield, Connecticut.

Name of head of family: DARLING, ABEL
Free white males of 16 years and upward, including heads of families: 1
Free white males under 16 years: 4
Free white females, including heads of families: 5

Also from the Connecticut Census, page 67, was Hamlin Darling. He may be a brother to ABEL DARLING. <

Name of head of family: Darling, Hamlin
Free white males of 16 years and upward, indluding heads of families: 1
Free white females, including heads of families: 3

In the 1810 census of Luzerne County (which Bradford County was then a part of) John Darling, one male over 45 and one female. THERON DARLING, three males under 10, one male 16-26, one male 24-45, and one male over 45. Also one female under 10, and one female 16-26.

In the 1820 census of Bradford County, Orwell Township, page 95 we have a THAUAN (probably THERON) DARLING.

In the 1830 census of Bradford County, Orwell Township, page 44 we have ABEL DARLING listed.

In the 1840 census of Orwell Township is ABEL DARLING with one male under 5 and one male 30-40. One female under 5, two females 5-10, four females 10-15, and one female 30-40. Also in the 1840 census was THERON DARLING with one male 15-20, one male 20-30, and one male 60-70. One female under 5, one female 10-15, one female 15-20, one female 30-40, and one female 50-60. One more Darling in the 1840 census was Darius Darling, one male 30-40 and one female 30-40.

In the 1850 census of Warren Township is Charles Darling (35) and his wife Betsey Arnold (30). Charles had three children, Betsy (7), Esther (5), and Silas (2). Also living in their home was Lyman Arnold (23), Charles Arnold (21), and Horace Arnold (20). Also in the Warren Township Census was Major B. Darling (36), a farmer. His wife, Mary Jane (25), was born in Connecticut. Major had three children, T. A. (7), F. E. (4), and Q. U. (2). Also living in Major's home was Stillman Lathrop (15). Major was THERON's son and was married a second time to Susan Wheaton.

We have information now that Charles Darling may be the son of Otis Darling who married Keziah Witherell on February 1, 1802 in Chester County, Windsor, Vermont. They had three children:

        1. Almira Darling (1805-7/22/1880) died in Windham, Vermont. She married Jesse Lunn.
        2. Adolphus Darling (3/4/1808-7/22/1891). He was born in Vermont and died in Bradford County, Macedonia, Pennsylvania. He married Rachel Mastin.
        3. William Darling (b. 4/14/1811) in Eaton County, Madison, New York.
Otis Darling then married Elizabeth Chubbuck (4/22/1787-1855) who is the daughter of Simeion Chubbuck and Lydia Pratt in 1815. Elizabeth (Betsey) was born in Bedford County, Hillsborough, New Hampshire, and died in Outagamie County, Greenville, Wisconsin. Betsey and several children had moved to Wisconsin by 1845. Otis and Betsey had seven children:
        4. Charles G. Darling (1817-9/27/1884) was born in Susquehanna County, Pennsylvania. He died in Bradford County, Cadis, Pennsylvania. Charles married Betsey Arnold.
        5. Lydia Chubbuck Darling (1/1/1819-12/12/1886) was born in Susquehanna County, Pennsylvania and died in Plattsmouth County, Cass, Nebraska. She married Joseph Critz in Racine, Wisconsin.
        6. Simeon Darling (1821-2/18/1863) died in the Civil War at Memphis Tennessee. He married Julia Webley in Racine Wisconsin. He then married Melinda Young in Madison County, New York.
        7. Cynthia Darling (b. 1822) in Susquehanna County, Pennsylvania.
        8. Milo N. Darling (6/18/1824-2/4/1898) was born in Vermont and died in Bradford County, Cadis, Pennsylvania. Milo married Laura ? and then married Elizabeth ?
        9. Melissa Darling (b. 1827) was born in Pennsylvania. She died in Wisconsin. Melissa married Martin Bryden Dorward in Dodge County, Wisconsin.
9a. Lorenzo Edwin Darling (b. 8/9/1829) was born in Bradford County, Warren, Pennsylvania. He died in Outagamie County, Shiocton, Wisconsin.

Otis's father is Caleb Darling (b. 11/30/1748) was born in Mendon County, Worcester, Massachussetes. He died in Manchester County, Bennington, Vermont. In 1772 he resided in Windham County, Townshend, Vermont. He served in the militarty in Captain Fish's Company in September of 1782. In 1800 he resided in Windham Township, Andover, Vermont. In 1804 he resided in Windosr County, Londonderry, Vermont. In 1810 he resided in manchester County, in Bennington, Vermont. Caleb married Sarah Albee, daughter of Ebenezer Albee and Esther Fish, on February 13, 1771, in Mendon County, Worcester, Massachusettes. Sarah was born in Mendon County, Worcester, Massachusettes.

In the 1790 census, Caleb is listed as a head of household in Townsend, Vermont. There is one male over 16, which is Caleb; and three males under 16; and one female. Since Caleb's son Lyman would be at least eighteen by 1790 we think that Caleb and Sarah Darling had four sons by this time. Several researchers have cited that Caleb had a daughter named Lucinda who waws born about 1780. She does not appear in any census enumeration for Caleb, at least with a birth year of 1780.

What is certain is that Caleb and Sarah Darling had at least four and possibly five sons, only one which can be postively identified. Since Otis Darling is living near Caleb in 1800 and 1801, he is a possible additon to the list of names. Caleb and Sarah Darling had eight children:

        1. Lyman Darling (b. 12/24/1772-1773) was born in Mendon County, Worcester, Massachusettes. In 1804, Lyman resided in Windsor County, Lodonderry, Vermont.
        2. ? Darling (b. 1775/1790) in Townsend, Vermont. Possibly Otis Darling.
        3. Otis Darling (3/5/1777-4/1850).
        4. ? Darling (b. 1775/1790) in Townsend, Vermont.
        5. ? Darling (b. 1775/1790) in Townsend, Vermont.
        6. Lucinda Darling (1780-1812).
        7. ? Darling (b. 1775/1790) in Townsend, Vermont.
        8. Ebenezer Darling (1790-5/13/1838).

In the Windham 1850 census was listed H. Darling (50) born in New York State. His wife Eliza (50) born in New York State, and two children Lucinda (24) and Ransom (18) both born in Pennsylvania.

In the 1860 census at Canton is listed a W. S. Darling (25) born in New York State and his wife Eliza (20) born in Pennsylvania. Also listed was Matilda Darling (30) born in Pennsylvania, Lucius (25), and Loella (4). Also listed at this home was a B. Shoemaker born in New York State.
Three Darlings listed in Civil War records are James M. (Asylum Township), William S. (Canton), and Lewis (LeRoy).

        I. ABEL DARLING (1750-8/13/1821) married ANN WOODRUFF (1755-7/26/1809) on April 20, 1775. ABEL DARLING and his son 1. THERON DARLING (5/26/1779-7/24/1850) came to Orwell, Pennsylvania, from Litchfield, Connecticut in 1801.

ANN WOODRUFF is the daughter of NATHANIEL and MARY KILBORN WOODRUFF, JR.. She was born in Litchfield, Conneticut and died in Orwell, Pennsylvania. You may read more about ANN WOODRUFF and her ancestors on their own page. Just follow the link at the bottom of this page.

THERON DARLING was prominent in the affairs of pioneer settlement. THERON DARLING filled various positions in militia, and was popularly known as "Colonel Darling".

In speaking of the "Great Hunt of 1818," one who remembers it well, says: "Among Colonel Stevens' hunters was Major Theron Darling". He was a man over six feet tall. In the chase on one of the deer on the knoll, a big doe, Major Darling stood still, waiting for the deer to be driven his way. He stood with his long legs wide apart. Suddenly the doe started toward him, ducked her head and rushed between the major's legs, that being the most avaiable opening she saw for escape. The contact threw the major forward on the doe's body. He mechanically clasped his arms about her horns. Away the perplexed deer flew through the forest, bearing Major Darling, feet first, along with her. He held on and after the deer had run with him half a mile or more, he managed to catch her by one hind leg and trip her up. She fell heavily to the ground and before she could regain her feet the major cut her throat."

        1. MAJOR or COLONEL DARLING married on July 25, 1801, to SARAH (Sally) RUSSELL, daughter of JOHN and MARY (WOODRUFF) RUSSELL. SARAH DARLING died February 16, 1870, aged 87 years. They had nine children:
In the 1850 Orwell census was:
        11. ABEL P. DARLING (46), a farmer, who was born in 1804. ABEL's wife was LAURA ALLIS (45), a house keeper. ABEL and LARUA had nine children:
        111. SARAH ORDELIA DARLING (4/25/1827-2/7/1922) was twenty-two in 1850. ORDELIA married AARON GAYLORD FRISBIE. You may read more about AARON and ORDELIA on the FRISBIE page. Just follow the link on the bottom of this page.
        112. Theresa Darling (21).
        113. Caroline Darling (20).
        114. Lucretia Darling (19).
        115. Adaline Darling (18).
        116. Eliza Darling (14).
        117. Hillis T. Darling (10/10/1838-8/15/1917) married Sophia H. (10/20/1840-7/3/1903). They had two children:
        1171. Rolland Darling (7/3/1861-7/12/1862).
        1172.Laura Darling (2/28/1871-7/3/1871).
        118. Polly Ann Darling (10).
        119. Leroy Darling (8). All of ABEL's children were born in Pennsylvania. ABEL and LAURA owned the farm next to the Darling Cemetery. Many of the Darlings are buried in the Darling Cemetery just before you get into Orwell, on Orwell Hill.
        12. William R. Darling to Elizabeth Lovett (d. 11/23/1875).
        13. Dennis R. Darling to Ruby Goodwin.
        14. Polly Ann Darling (1810-6/14/1867) never married.
        15. Adaline H. Darling to John Beardslee.
        16. Major B. Darling first to Mary Jane Bedckwith, second to Susan Wheaton.
        17. Lyman H. Darling (d. 6/8/1864) died unmarried.
        18. Elizabeth Darling to William N. Morgan.
        19. Cullen R. Darling to Juliette Beebe.
        19a. Nancy E. Darling (8/25/1826-1/2/1894) never married.

According to historical research by Evelyn Hall, the Darling Cemetery was formed April 5, 1848, when Dennis Darling deeded part of the land to Ben Lyon, setting aside a public burial area.

In 1867, W.H. Darling sold more land, for $15.60, to Hampton Champlin and J.J. Newell to add to the cemetery. It now had 1.95 acres.

On August 10, 1903, the Darling Cemetery Association was formed. Members were Champlin, Reed Cook, Henry Newell, G.G. Corbin, Herb Chaffee, Leroy Darling, CHARLES WERKHEISER was LAURA FRISBIE's husband, and LAURA was ORDELIA DARLING FRISBIE's daughter, and Eaton Frisbie (ORDELIA DARLING FRISBIE's son).

The first grave may have been that of THERON and SALLY DARLING's baby girl who died in 1803. At least two other infants of theirs are buried nearby: Edwin B. Darling (d. 1/25/1804), at the age of 2 weeks, and George W. Darling (d. 3/2/1818), 6 months old, who died in 1818.

Another early grave belongs to Lyman Merrill, 21, son of Obadiah and Lucy Merrill. One day in the summer 1816, Merrill helped at a barnraising on the Theron Darling farm. That night a storm blew down part of the structure, so the next day workers began rebuilding. As someone yelled, "Ho-heave!" part of the barn fell onto Merrill, crushing his skull. The young man was still alive. "Carry me into the shade," he told his friends. "Lay me under the chestnut tree." The tree stood in the cemetery. Merrill lived a few days, then died on July 16.
