5314. HENDERSON ROOF (5/5/1839-5/1/1914) was born at Frenchtown, New Jersey, on the F.X. Homet farm. He died in Standing Stone, Bradford County, Pennsylvania. HENDERSON ROOF married AMANDA CECELIA VOUGHT (12/10/1845-2/9/1925) on July 26, 1863 in Standing Stone, Bradford County, Pennsylvania. AMANDA VOUGHT was born in Standing Stone, Bradford County, Pennsylvania, and died in Rome, Bradford County, Pennsylvania. She was the eldest daughter of JOHN VOUGHT (1822-1898) and ESTHER JEMIMA HORTON (1825-1912). JOHN VOUGHT was the son of DAVID VOUGHT (d. 1865) and ELLEN HUYCK (d. 1860). ESTHER HORTON was the daughter of WILLIAM HORTON (1789-1858) and ESTHER COWELL (1789-1880). DAVID VOUGHT was the son of GODFREY VOUGHT (1760-1849) and MARY CROFT (d. 1850). ELLEN HUYCK was the daughter of WILLIAM HUYCK (1763-1849) and MARGARET WESTBROOK (b. 1764). GODFREY VOUGHT was the son of JOSEPH CHRISTIAN VOUGHT (wft est. 1709-1738 & wft est. 1767-1823) and MARGARET RINEHART. MARY CROFT was the daughter of JOHN CROFT and MARY BOMAINE.
AMANDA CECELIA VOUGHT was born and brought up in Standing Stone, Pennsylvania where she spent all her life, except the last six years, when she made her home with her sister, Mrs. Eliza Brown of Rome, Pennsylvania. She was a devoted mother and a good Christian, always ready to help others.
HENDERSON ROOF and AMANDA VOUGHT made their home for almost seventy-five years on the farm that his father, CHARLES ROOF, bought in 1842. Mrs. B.B. Cooley subsequently owned the place. HENDERSON ROOF was always a strong adherent of the Democratic party. Both HENDERSON ROOF and AMANDA VOUGHT are buried in their family plot in the Standing Stone Cemetery next to the Methodist Church. They had nine children:
- 53141. Clarence Walter Roof (9/23/1864-7/26/1906) was born and died in Velarde, Standing Stone Township, Bradford County, Pennsylvania. He is buried in the Rummerfield Methodist Cemetery. He was a member of the Methodist church at Keene Summit, and was a Republican in politics. He married Anna May Thorp (7/19/1876-1941) on June 22, 1898, in Standing Stone, Bradford County, Pennsylvania.
Anna Thorp was born in South Auburn, Susquehanna County, Pennsylvania, and died in Burlington, Bradford County, Pennsylvania. She was the daughter of Burton B. Thorp and Amanda C. Bender. Her parents moved to Bradford County when she was a girl.
Clarence Roof and Anna Thorp lived in Verlarde, which is about three miles distant from the villages of either Standing Stone or Rummerfield. Their farm was known as the Dixon place. They had three children:

- 531412. Helen Amanda Roof (b. 2/25/1903) married James Plaisted of Elmira, New York.
- 531413. Ida Belle Roof (b. 11/14/1905) married Henry Tracy Witting of Ulster, Bradford County, Pennsylvania.
Anna Thorp moved to Towanda, Bradford County, Pennsylvania, and married Albin Harris on December 23, 1909. In 1920 they took up their residence at Burlington, Bradford County, Pennsylvania, where Albin died in 1938.
- 53142. Ida Bell Roof (b. 6/14/1866) married Louis P. Landmesser of Powell, Bradford County, Pennsylavania.
- 53143. Charles Melvin Roof (8/3/1868-4/5/1931) died in Herrickville, Bradford County, Pennsylvania. He married Fannie Maria Schoonover (4/7/1864-6/17/1936) on November 21, 1886. Maria died in Herrickville, Bradford County, Pennsylvania. They are buried in the Standing Stone Methodist Cemetery.
The Schoonovers were an old Dutch family, originating along the Hudson and later in the upper Delaware, or Minisink Valley, where we find they settled as early as 1739. Like practically all the other Standing Stone pioneers, the immediate progenitors came from Sussex County, New Jersey. The collateral descendants of this branch of the family will be found recorded in the Schoonover Reunion Book of this Serried, Nosl. CLXXIV-CCXVI. Charles and Maria had six children:

- 531432. Millie Roof (b. 9/30/1888) married James Welliver, Sr. of Herrickville, Bradford County, Pennsylvania. I have found six children, but don't know there order.

- 5314326. Gladys Welliver Allis (4/24/1925-11/12/2004) married Arthur E. Allis (d. 7/31/1992). Gladys Allis was born in Herrick Township. She attended the Herrickville, Camptown, and Wyalusing schools, graduating from Rome High School in 1942. She was employed by Eclipse in Elmira, New York and Daugherty's Restaurant in Ulster, Pennsylvania. She was a member of the Herrickville United Methodist Church and served as a lay chaplain at Memorial Hospital in Towanda, Pennsylvania. She was active in community affairs in the Herrickville area, member of the Herrickville Sewing Club, AARP, enjoyed traveling, and water aerobics. The viewing will be held at the Maryott-Bowen Funeral Home in Towanda, Pennsylvania. The Rev. Helen Learn, pastor of the Herrickville United Methodist Church will officiate. Interment will be in the Bradford County Memorial Park in Luthers Mills, Pennsylvania. They had five children:

- 531433. Rev. Harry Clarence Roof (8/2/1891-12/1972) died in Newfoundland, Pennsylvania. He married Lena Graham (3/27/1897-2/21/1989) on March 27, 1918. Lena died in Greentown, Pennsylvania. She was the daughter of Robert and Flora Wickizer Graham. They resided at South Sterling, Wayne County, Pennsylvania. Rev. Harry Roof was the pastor of the Methodist Church in South Sterling. In politics he is a staunch Republican. They had two children:

- 531434. Roy Roof (2/9/1894-2/1964) married Nina Mabel Wells (b. 6/29/1894) on January 14, 1915. Nina was from Herrickville, Bradford County, Pennsylvania. She was the daughter of Grove and Flora Allis Wells, the latter a descendant of Eleazer Allis, pioneer of Allis Hollow, Bradford County, Pennsylvania. Roy was a farmer near Herrickville, Bradford County, Pennsylvania. They had six children:
- 5314341. Ralph Roof (3/13/1916-1/10/2003) married Dorothy Chubbuck (d. 1992) on November 10, 1945. They resided in Athens, Bradford County, Pennsylvania. Ralph Roof was employed by Ingersoll-Rand Foundry in Athens and later by the Waverly Casting Facility for 36 years, retiring in 1979. He also worked as a part-time carpenter and general handy man. Ralph was the man on the Ford tractor who plowed gardens in the Valley area for 50 years. Ralph Roof died at the home of his daughter, Joyce Roof, in Herrickville, Pennsylvania. The viewing and funeral service was held at the Maryott-Bowen Funeral Home, 217 York Avenue, Towanda, Pennsylvania with Pastor Richard Vildhouse of the Orwell Bible Church, officiating. Interment was in the Bradford County Memorial Park, Luthers Mills, Pennsylvania. They had two children:

- 5314343. Levi W. Roof married Frances Gorham on May 6, 1949. She was the daughter of Claude Gorham of Wells Hollow. Levi joined the custodial staff of Towanda High School in 1958.
Ralph Gorham came from England to Plymouth, Massachusetts in 1635. He returned to England, but his son, Captain John Gorham, remained in this country and married Desire, Daughter of Pilgrim John Howland of the Mayflower. The local branch of the family still occupies the original settlement. They had five children:

- 5314344. Ruth Roof (deceased) married William Baker of Sayre, Bradford County, Pennsylvania.
- 5314345. Walter Roof (6/5/1926-3/26/2004) was born at home in Herrick Township. He died in the Bradford County Manor in West Burlington, Pennsylvania. He resided his entire life along with his mother on the family dairy farm which he operated for many years. He also served as a DHIA Supervisor for over 30 years. He was a member of the Orwell Grange until its closure and then transferred his membership to Wesauking Grange where he was active for many years.

- 531435. Ralph Roof (8/14/1900-7/1969) married Beulah Keiper (b. 6/25/1909) on July 24, 1924. She was the daughter of Rufus and Maude Eckman Keiper of White Haven, Pennsylvania. They had five children:
- 5314351. Leon Roof married Merle Winans (d. 9/28/1947) in June of 1946. They had one child,

He then married Marion Rohe on February 5, 1949.
- 5314352. Beatrice Roof married Henry Sitko.
- 5314353. Arnold Roof lived in Shickshinny, Pennsylvania and then San Pedro, California.
- 5314354. Marie Roof married Robert Mengle.

- 531436. Eleanor Roof (b. 9/5/1903-deceased) married William Manford (deceased) Allen and then married Chester J. Lampman. Eleanor and William had three children. I am not sure of the order:
- 5314361. Jimmy G. Allen (8/14/1929-7/2/2007) passed away at his home. He married Joyce E. Ward on January 3, 1949 in Frederick, Maryland.
He was born in Sayre, Pennsylvania and was a graduate of Towanda High School class of 1947 and in earl years was employed by the Wright Giffin Construction Company in Lawton, Pennsylvania. He then worked for the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation in Towanda, Pennsylvania for 22 years until his retirement in 1990.
He loved spending time with his grandchildren and his great-grandchildren and enjoyed playing golf. He also enjoyed hunting, fishing, woodworking and reading. Jim and Joyce had seven children:

- 53143612. Diane Allen married ? Huston. She lives in East Smithfield, Pennsylvania.

- 53153615. Donna J. Allen married David Yale. They live in East Smithfield, Pennsylvania.
- 53153616. Deborah M. Allen married ? Smith. She lives in Candor, New York.

He is survived by 17 grandchildren and 21 great-grandchildren. A grandson Christopher Allen is deceased.
The funeral and committal service were held at the Maryott-Bowen Funeral Home in Towanda, Pennsylvania. Pastor Jim Nichlos officiated. Interment will be in the Orange Hill Cemetery, Athens Township, Pennsylvania.

- 53144. John Vought Roof (b. 10/23/1870) married Ida Emery (b. 7/18/1872) on January 20, 1894. Ida was the youngest daughter of David and Mary Catherine Hendershot Emery of Standing Stone. John and Ida lived in Standing Stone Township, Bradford County, Pennsylvania. They lived on what was called the Whitfield Van Ness farm. They are both buried in the Rummerfield Cemetery. Ida moved to Towanda in November of 1921 and while there attended the Presbyterian Church. They had three children:

- 531442. Mary Roof (b. 7/9/1900) was a stenographer for C. M. Thompson for a number of years.
- 531443. Geraldine Roof (b. 7/13/1910) graduated from Towanda High School in 1929 and from the Robert Packer Hospital School of Nursing at Sayre, Bradford County, Pennsylvania, in June of 1932.
- 53145. WILLIAM LESLIE ROOF (12/27/1874-12/27/1943) was born in Standing Stone, Bradford County, Pennsylvania, and died at his daughter's (Mrs. Warren (Eliza) Fisher home in Wilkes Barre, Pennsylvania. The viewing was at the Pinnock Funeral Home in LeRaysville, Pennsylvania. The funeral service was at the Standing Stone Methodist Church. Interment was in the Standing Stone Cemetery, with the Rev. Jordan D. Cole officiating. He married JENNIE DELLA HANKINSON (6/3/1875-1951) on December 25, 1894. You may read more about JENNIE HANKINSON and her family on their own home page. WILLIAM ROOF spent part of his life farming in Standing Stone Township and later purchasing another place between Mercur and Allis Hollow, a corner of Wysox Township on Harmony Hill. WILLIAM ROOF subsequently moved to Towanda and went to work at Sayre, Pennsylvania, for the Lehigh Valley Railroad Shops. In the spring of 1931, WILLIAM ROOF and JENNIE DELLA HANKINSON moved to Sayre. WILLIAM ROOF died in 1943, and both WILLIAM ROOF and JENNIE DELLA HANKINSON are buried in the Standing Stone Cemetery. WILLIAM ROOF and JENNIE DELLA HANKINSON had six children:
- 531451. Nila Arminda Roof (8/13/1895-12/21/1976) was born in Rummerfield, Pennsylvania. She died at the Bradford County Manor, in Burlington, Pennsylvania, while she was recovering from a stroke she had recently suffered.
She spent early years in Standing Stone, Pennsylvania and Windham Center, Pennsylvania, and attended school in Windham Center, Pennsylvania. In later years she lived in Sayre, Pennsylvania and Rome, Pennsylvania.
She married Floyd Coleman, then George Green, and third Leon McNeal (7/12/1901-1/1971). Leon died in Rome, Bradford County, Pennsylvania. Nila had one daughter:

Nila McNeal's funeral service was held at the Archer/Miller/McCloskey Funeral Home in Towanda, Pennsylvania. The Rev. Thomas Geiger, pastor of the Assembly of God Church in Towanda, Pennsylvania, officiated. Nila and Leon McNeal are buried in the Oak Grove Cemetery in Burlington, Bradford County, Pennsylvania.
- 531452. Henry J. Roof (4/7/1897-4/2/19676) was born in Standing Stone, Bradford County, Pennsylvania, and died in Binghamton, New York, at the Binghamton General Hospital at 7:15 am. He lived at 29 Gerard Avenue in Binghamton. He was at the George H. Scholderer Home at 269 Chenango Street, Binghamton, New York. The Rev. Donald L. Carter, pastor of the Nimmonsburg Methodist Church, will officiate. Interment will be in the Spring Forest Cemetery. He was a General Construction worker. He married Mabel Esseltine and then Mary M. Smith (11/4/1898-2/9/1980) on November 8, 1922 in Towanda, Bradford County, Pennsylvania.
Mabel was the daughter of Nelson and Della Birchard Esseltine. She is buried in the East Herrick Cemetery. Henry Roof and Mabel Esseltine had one daughter,

Mary Smith was the daughter of Emanuel and Sarah Bowman Smith. She was born in New Albany, Bradford County, Pennsylvania, and died in Binghamton, New York. Henry Roof and Mary Smith had five children:
