Another story relates how CHARLES WERKHEISER killed his wife, was tried and convicted, and, after he was hung at the Easton courthouse, his sons took possession of his body and buried his body in a field on the farm. There is no grave or record of burial at the Forks Cemetery for him. Then there is a note in our records that says he was buried near Uhler's Hotel, which is, only a few feet north of the northern boundary line of the 272-acre farm.
Still another story claimed that CHARLES WERKHEISER was a wealthy man. They estimated that he bought 1,600 acres for $10,000.00. At the time of his death it was rumored that he had hidden a lot of money in his home or farm buildings. Either his sons never found the money or never admitted knowledge of its existence. After CHARLES WERKHEISER'S son John bought the 272 acres back from Christian Butz in 1782, which the Sheriff sold to him, he, John, starting from bankruptcy amassed a collection of 18 tracts of land totaling 1,287 acres before he died. That was quite an accomplishment for the time period of 1782 to 1830.
