THE ANNA ELIZABETH WERKHEISER HOME PAGE
145. Anna Elizabeth Werkheiser (8/30/1841-1/17/1912) was born in Plainfield Township, Northampton County, Pennsylvania and died in Milton Township, Wayne County, Ohio. She is buried in the Swagler Hoover Cemetery, Milton Township, Wayne County, Ohio.
Marguerite always wondered how Jonathan Swagler and Anna Werkheiser met. In the 1860 census of Milton Township, there was a Anna E. Buskirk living with the Jacob Swagler family. Jacob was the father of Jonathan. She was 18 years old. Later it dawned on her that she might be Anna Werkheiser. She looked at the census again for any one named Werkheiser. There was no one. But the next entry beside the Swagler's was a Ladones Buskirk and wife Catharine. She knew that Anna's mother's name was Catharine. She thought Ladones probably worked for Swaglers and they thought Anna's name was Buskirk. We don't know what happened to Catharine, she was not found in the 1870 census or any death record.
The obituary of Ann Elizabeth Werkheiser Swagler Lance reads as follows:
Ann was born in Northamton County, Pennsylvania, on August 30, 1841. She married Jonathan Swagler of Milton Township, Wayne County, Ohio on January 28, 1861. It came as a shock to her many friends, as she had always enjoyed good health, never having had any serious illness during he alloted three score and ten.
Loving hands of children ministered to her wants, and everything possible was done to alleviate her suffering, but she realized she was nearing her heavenly home and sang those grand old hymns, "Rock of Ages," "Lord, I'm Coming Home." She leaves to mourn their loss, six children, eleven grandchildren, two brothers and one sister. Funeral services were held at the home. Rev. Myers of Doylestown, officiating.
