        1434. Charles Werkheiser (7/1/1867-3/6/1942) was born in Harmony, New Jersey. Sometime during the years of 1896 and 97 he met Sarah Christina Black (4/11/1879-9/9/1941)and they married in Washington, Pennsylvania, on December 25, 1897. They immediately left by train for Illinois. Sarah was the daughter of Noah and Maria Richey Black. Her mother passed away when she was 3 years old and she was then sent to live with some friends for most of her childhood. Sarah was a homemaker all of her life and helped many friends and relatives at the birth of their children or in times of sickness. Charles and Sarah worked for several farmers in Cornwall Township and around the Atkinson area for many years. During her later life she was ill with a problem of bleeding easily and almost bleeding to death on two occasions and having to have her nose packed. She also developed a kidney problem and at this time they did not have the medication or know how to take care of this problem. She was taken to the hospital and the X-ray showed she had stones in both kidneys and the duct. Kidney failure was finally the cause of death. They had three children:

        14342. John Arthur Werkheiser (4/28/1900-9/2/1960) was born in Alba Township, Henry County, Illinois. He died in Genesee, Illinois.
        John was an Assembler at the John Deere Harvester Company in east Moline, Illinois, until he was forced to retire. He became disabled before he retired, from the dreaded disease of multiple sclerosis. This effected his legs and he had to use a wheel chair for the last years of his life.
        John married Lottie Edna Broadbent (7/22/1909-9/26/1964) on February 13, 1932, in Atkinson, Illinois. Lottie was born in Cornwall Township, Henry County, Illinois. She was a LPN. She was a housewife for many years and then when her husband became disabled she had to find employment. She worked as a nurses aid in a nursing home for a number of years. John and Lottie had two children:
        143421. Phyllis Marie Werkheiser married Keith Elwood Wiese on March 18, 1951. Phyllis worked as a secretary at the Rock Island Arsenal until Pam was born. For the last fifteen years, she has been a receptionist/office manager for a chiropracter.
        Phyllis graduated high school, June 1, 1950. The week before Keith and Phyllis were married, they had a terrible blizzard. They had 14-18 inches of snow with high winds. As fast as the roads were plowed, they would blow shut again. Keith was living on a farm. He had to walk several miles to meet Phyllis, so that they could get a marriage license. Every now and then he reminds Phyllis of this. They were married in the Grace United Brethren Church, Genessee, Illinois.
        Keith is the son of Wilbur Spence and Hazel Melvina Hart Wiese. He graduated from high school in 1944, and went into the service that fall as a paratrooper. He did an occupation stint in Japan until late 1946. He is a retired calibration measurement specialist, at Rock Island Arsenal, Rock Island, Illinois. He now is a custodian to the Grace Church. They had two children:
        1434211. Pamela Marie Wiese married Randall Ray Ullmark on August 30, 1975. Pamela was born in Hammond Henry Hospital In Gennesee, Illinois. Randy attended Blackhawk Junior College. He was in the Air Foce. They had two children:
        14342111. Joshua Ray Ullmark was born in Fort Belvoir Hospital in Alexandria, Virginia.
        14342112. Jennifer Marie Ullmark was born in Fort Belvoir Hospital in Alexandria, Virginia.
        1434212. Steven Keith Wiese went to school at Black Hawk Jr. College, McComb, Illinois. He has a degree in Computer Programing.
        143422. Merle Elaine Werkheiser was born in Genesee, Illinois. She married Robert James Martin on February 7, 1954. Merle worked for a short time after moving to the farm as a nusrses aid at the Hillcrest Home, which is a short distance from their farm.
        14343. Ada Marie Werkheiser (b. 10/11/1902) lived four days. She is buried in the Liberty Cemetery.

        Charles was a very kind person and you never heard him raise his voice to anyone. He was active until about 3 months before he passed away and at that time he suffered a stroke which caused him to be bedfast for the rest of his life.
