THE LEVI HENRY and MARGARET EVERHART WERKHEISER HOME PAGE

        146. Levi Henry Werkheiser (11/7/1843-3/29/1926) was born in Northampton County, Pennsylvania. He died in Wadsworth Township, Medina County, Ohio. Levi is buried in the Acme Cemetery, Medina County, Ohio. He was a blacksmith. Levi passed away at the residence of his daughter, Mrs. O. G. Reese at Acme.
Levi's father died when he was a boy of nine years. He made his home with other folks until he was about 15 years old, when the spirit of adventure led him to find his way by the trails of the early pioneers as far west as the state of Indiana. Apparently the rugged pioneer life lost some of its attractions, as he retraced his trail and returned as far east as the locality of Acme where he lived the remainder of his life. For part of the time he made his home with the John Miller family, while he worked as a stone mason and served an apprenticeship in the blacksmith trade at River Styx, later purchasing a shop at Acme.

He was married to Margaret Everhart on February 16, 1867, by the Rev. C. H. Reiter. To this union an only daughter, Mrs. O. G. Reese was born. They built their pioneer home in Acme and he labored in his trade for more than 57 years. In the year 1913 he suffered his first attack of paralysis which prevented his following his trade, after which they moved to the home of his daughter where he has been cared for during his years of disability. His wife died in August of 1917.

He was baptised in infancy and confirmed a member of the Jerusalem Church at Acme on August 11, 1865, by Rev. C. Wernie in the log church that stood across the way from the present building. He proved to be one of the staunch pioneers of the Church of the Reformation, showing untiring zeal and devotion in helping to lay the foundation of the present existing organization. He played an important part in the formulatin of plans and construction of the present building and for many years he served the congregation as sexton, treasurer and member of the church council, recovering as his remuneration the joys that he found in service. He was made an honarary member of the church council in 1917 in recognition of his fidelity.

Mrs. O. G. Reese and grandson Charles A. Reese, Columbus survive him, a granddaughter, Martha Jane having died in infancy.

Members of the church council served as pallbearers at the funeral services Monday afternoon, March 29, at the Lutheran Church home, by his pastor Rev. R. L. Lubold. Internment was made in the Acme Cemetery, with Good and Bicksler in charge. This was copied from the Medina Gazette on April 6, 1926, page four.

Date on tombstone for Madalena Margaret is 1840-1917.
