THE JOSEPH WERKHEISER HOME PAGE
232. Joseph P. Werkheiser (12/23/1812-1/8/1880) married Christina Messinger (5/21/1837-11/18/1908). Joseph and Christina married on November 15, 1862. Joseph was 46 when his father died. Valentine was very guarded about giving him his inheritance outright. His five brothers all received or had help in buying contiguous farms. It seems that Joseph was a hired man for his father unitl his father died. He became twenty-one in 1833 and his father bequeathed him $1,600.00 as his pay for the 25 years from 1833 to 1858 that he worked for his father. He did not get the $1,600.00, he only got the yearly interest for the $1,600.00.
Joseph did not marry until 1862 when he was almost 50 years old. As an item of interest, his older brother, Solomon, and his wife had seven children and she had died by 1855. Joseph's wife, Christina Messinger, was 25 years younger than he was. They had nine children and the last one was born eight months after he died at the age of 67. His wife was a widow for 28 years.
Howard Werkheiser would tell the story of how his parents would hitch up the horse and sulky on a Sunday afternoon and go to visit his grandmother Christina, in Upper Mount Bethel. Howard never understood his grandparents background because he would say that they came from over the mountain, meaning on the other side of Wind Gap. This shows that he was confused with the Monroe County, Valentine Werkheiser married to Christina Fenner.
The only property from the Werkheiser barony that is known that Joseph owned, were two small parcels directly across from the Forks Church. He bought them from his borthers, Aaron and Abraham, four and six years after his father died. You can still see stones and boulders on the shoulder of the original limestone quarry today. Warren Werkheiser said that the pit or hole was filled in when the highway from Easton to Stockertown was straightened out in front of the Forks Church. Joseph and Christiana had nine children:
