A popular book, (Krashen, S. 1999, Condemned without a Trial: Bogus Arguments Against Bilingual Education, Portsmouth, NH: Heinemann Publishing Company) presented a popular case against bilingual education.
Please note that his arguments related to an educational system and not to the concept of bilingualism itself.
He offered good points about bringing children into the local culture, the high cost of an ineffective program, and more.
However, we must distinguish between our discussion in this website and the school system's attempt to introduce a parallel program for young new immigrants who are still struggling to speak the local language.
This website presents efforts by parents to maintain their own familiar language within their own home. We do not discuss a subject in a school, but rather a natural phenomenon.
That makes a world of difference.
