A separate article discusses the effectiveness of signs in the home. That stage can be preceded by preparing large, colorful flash cards. You may take the words from a primer such as Fun With Dick and Jane (remember that one?). As your child learns each word, you can hang it up on a string near the ceiling in the living room.

There's an additional benefit to using words from a specific book. After your child learns the words, he can read from that book right away. That’s very gratifying to the child. It makes him feel big.

It's also very gratifying to the parent.
