There are different forms of “submersion" programs:

• Classroom environments
  • "Sink or swim" form of bilingual education
  • A child who is classified as "limited English proficient (LEP)" and who is mainstreamed in regular classes
  • This child is given no assistance or support in order to learn the acquired language
• Non-classroom environments
  • The child struggles. He ultimately copes in a foreign language and culture

None of these educational programs are of serious interest to parents who want to raise their children as bilinguals. Parents should not try to copy professional programs that have questionable results. A parent should never use his own child as a guinea pig - especially not when there are clear alternatives that have been proven effective.
