Professionals and laymen love to get involved with bilingual families. All too many of them have not been trained in bilingualism. They have an opinion about the subject, and many ideas about how you should not raise your child, even though they do not know much about the topic. They view the subject from their own narrow perspective. As a result, they may mislead the parents.

Yes, you should listen to those professionals if they diagnose your child with a disability of any kind.

However, in issues such as bilingualism, you are the expert about your child. It is important for you, as a parent, to believe in yourself and your own bilingualism project.

Nonetheless, if you still want to speak to a professional, be sure to find somebody who is an experienced expert in bilingualism.
