Until recently I worked as a CNA (Certified Nurse Assistant) in a long-term care facility here in northern New York. In my facility we have 80 residents, most of whom are elderly. Dealing with those suffering from Alzheimer's Disease can be really frustrating at times.
As with most of the facilities of this type throughout the country, staffing is always a problem. The low pay and high demands on the CNAs lead to a staff turnover of over ninety percent each year. The residents in a long term care facility deserve the best care we can give them, but when a CNA has 15 or more residents to care for, what kind of care are they really getting? That is one of the reasons I gave up my position a few weeks ago. My prayers are with those who remain there, caring for our nation's most precious citizens.
I ask for strength as I help those needing. Hide my tears for the sick and aging, And let my smile be the hope they are seeking. Guide my hands as they do for them, The things they cannot do, and we take for granted. Allow my eyes to see those things That make my stay with them a blessing. Provide the words I need to speak To let them know I love them so. As I do my work throughout the day It is for my residents that I stay, It is for my residents that I pray.
